GAINESVILLE. [THE CENTRAL CITY. ]

Population 1886, 3,832-1887, 5,088.

The Alachua country was discovered in the early part of the present century by the agents of a Havana merchant, Don Fer- nando de la Maza Arredondo, who were led here by the stories told by the Indians of a fertile country, many Indian villages, and a river that fell into a chasm in the earth and disappeared. This chasm the Indians called a-la-chu-a, meaning "big jug." which exists to this day, and is the general receptacle for a number of streams which are continually flowing therein but have no percep- tible outlet. In the very center of, what has since become known, as the Arredondo, Grant, the county of Alachua was formed, with Newnanville as the seat of the government, which. however, was later removed to Gainesville where it remains.

This inland city, with a population of 5,088 occupies a nearly central position in the county of which it is the county-seat, as also an aspirant as the future capital of Florida. It is situated on a beautiful elevation almost semi-distant from the Gulf and Atlan- tic, on the famous water shed which is claimed to be the most healthy locality in the State, and is at the junction of the railroad belonging to the Florida Railway & Navigation Company, the Florida Southern Railway, and a branch of the Savannah. Flori- da & Western Railway, on what is called a "Black Jack" (stunted red oak) ridge. on account of the well-known healthful- ness and purity of the water of such localities. The soil is a deep bed of Silica, underlaid with pipe clay at a depth varying from two to twenty feet. All over the city there are large orange trees, grapes, fine orange and pecan nurseries, varieties of fruit trees, strawberries, flowers, gardens of vegetables in profusion, and mel- ons of extraordinary size, rare plants, etc.

Gainesville is 50 miles by rail west of Palatka, and 75 in a south- westerly direction from Jacksonville. A disastrous fire a few months ago destroyed an entire block on the south side of the square. While this was of immediate loss to different individ- uals, it will prove a lasting benefit to the city, for already a num- ber of brick buildings are nearing completion and in a very short time it will all be covered by solid brick blocks. The pride of Alachua County, is the new brick Court House completed in De- cember, 1885. It is built in the Renaissance style of architecture. is fire proof. cost $50,000, and is surmounted by a public clock which

tolls out the hours of morning, noon and night to the constantly increasing inhabitants of this substantial city. The view from the dome is extended, taking in the undulating surface of thousands of acres of cotton fields and rich vegetable and fruit gardens which surround the city and contribute so much to its "fame and for- tune." Interspersed can be seen an occasional lake, a happy home half buried in an orange grove, the whole making a picture well worth a journey to the dome to enjoy. Gainesville vies with Lake City in being a market for the celebrated Sea Island Cotton, in the purchase and ginning of which there is a large amount of capital employed ; several of the principal streets have already been macadamized, and it is the intention to have all the thorough- fares similarly improved. The educational advantages of this city are second to none if not superior to any point in Florida.
