[THE PHENOMENAL CITY. ]
Population 1886, 3,528; 1887, 5,092.
This phenomenal city is situated in the center of a great orange district on the South Florida Railroad, 22 miles southwest of San- ford, and 93 miles from Tampa, at the junction of the Tavares, Or- lando and Atlantic Railroad with the South Florida. Its former name was Fort Gatlin, and as far back as 1856, it became the county seat of Orange county. It was settled by Hon. J. G. Spear, who donated four acres to the town for the site of the Court House, which was soon after built. The population in 1884 was estimated at 1.638. In Jan., 1886, it was 3,528; at present it is 5,092. Orlando is situated on the apex of the peninsula. 106 feet above Lake Monroe, the water on one side flowing into the Gulf of Mexico, on the other into the Atlantic Ocean. Whatever way one may drive, a beautiful lake forms a part of the landscape, around which, and sloping to the sandy beaches, are geometrically ar- ranged orange groves laden with golden fruit. The T. O. & A. Railroad already spoken of, was opened to the public in June, 1885. It is a broad gauge road. 32 miles in length and connects at Tavares with the Florida Railway and Navigation Company's system of roads, making direct communication with the great north and west. Pullman cars from any city can come direct to Orlando, and soon it is expected they can reach the Indian River country on the Atlantic coast.
During the past year the South Florida Railroad has adopted the standard gnage, enabling solid trains to run between Jackson- ville and Tampa. The number of brick buildings which have been erected here during the past year exceeds that of any city in the State outside of Jacksonville. They are particularly noticea- ble for their solidity and fine architectural appearance. The Armory building, which has for its first floor the public market is one of the finest brick structures in the State. Orlando is fast becoming the Railroad Center of South Florida. The roads pro- jected and in process of building, which are owned and controlled by Orlando men, are "too numerous to mention." They run here and there and all towards and centering at Orlando. See pages 497 and 498. Anticipating the certainty of a large city in the near future these men are not only building for this but for other generations. Enterprises are conducted to last not for a

day but for a century. Street railways, electric lights, tele- phones, sewerage, well graded and paved streets are receiving the attention of the people. They work together, which is a large factor in Orlando's success. Orlando is also a legal center, there being no less than thirty-seven lawyers, among whom are some of the brightest legal lights in the South.
There is a well-equipped fire department ; six churches for the whites and three for the colored people ; two Banks, a Board of Trade, several secret societies, a Telephone Exchange, two first- class weekly newspapers, The Orange County Report, Mahlon Gore, editor ; The South Florida Sentinel, Lahmer C. Vaughan, editor; The Orlando Daily Record, Dolph Edwards, editor. If there is one thing more than another that Orlando is proud of, it is the newspapers. They reflect the enterprise of the people, and are certainly well edited, well printed, and are sent out to the world with the emphasizing remark : "These indicate the kind of a city we live in." The Orlando Y. M. C. A. issue a monthly paper called The Bulletin.
The Orlando Band took the first prize at a Band contest in Jack- sonville last Spring.
