LEESBURG.
[THE CITY OF LAKES.]
Among the enterprising cities in this section of the State, Lees- burg believes in her destiny as "The Metropolis of South Florida." It was settled in 1857 by three brothers, E. M., J. A. and J. C. Lee and Mr. J. W. Fussell. At this time there was neither church nor school within ten miles of the settlement, a frame house was an unknown luxury ; pine logs constituted the only building material, the nearest saw and grist mill was at Sumterville, the nearest store was at Adamsville, a distance of ten miles, the nearest shipping point was Silver Springs, a distance of thirty-five miles ; thither was brought the cotton, sugar and molasses which the simple hearted settler converted into the few necessities of this truly Arcadian life.
The first steamboat made its appearance via the river Ocklawaha into Lake Griffin in September, 1857. This was made possible by the enterprise of Col. Hubbard L. Hart, of Palatka, who cleared all obstructions from that romantic stream. It took four days at that time to reach Jacksonville. The time by rail is now reduced to seven hours. The first place of public worship, in the shape of a brush arbor, was erected in 1858. The first store was built in 1866 by Messrs. J. C. & E. M. Lee. In 1868 the county site was removed from Sumterville to Leesburg, at which time it assumed the name. The county site was later (1882) removed to Sumter- ville, where it remains. Leesburg was incorporated as a city in 1873. Her first officers were: J. G. Wallace, Mayor ; Aiken Stivender, Marshal : G. M. Lee, W. J. Adams, F. C. Childs, J. W. Dyches and A. A. Stivender, Aldermen.
Leesburg is situated between Lakes Harris and Griffin, on the Florida Southern Railway, the St. John's & Lake Eustis Railroad and the Fla. Railway & Nav. Co.s R. R. It stands on a penin- sula 800 yards wide stretching between two lakes, the town cover- ing a belt of rolling pine land. Its principal street is macadamized and for more than a mile is ornamented on either side by a row of wild orange trees hung much of the year with golden fruitage. Leesburg is a fine shipping point for oranges. There were shipped during the last season 60,000 boxes from 1,230 acres lying within a radius of 3 miles of the city.
Leesburg is 35 miles south of Ocala, 105 from Palatka, 161} from Jacksonville, 108 north of Tampa, 42 from Orlando and 40 southwest from Astor. The St. John's & Lake Eustis road was completed to Fort Mason, 14 miles distant, in 1880, and there con- nected by steamer across the lake to a dock about one mile from

the business center of the city. In January, 1885, it was extended to Leesburg. In January, 1885, the Florida Southern Railway entered the city and in April of the same year the F. R. & N. reached here. One special feature of Leesburg is its macadamized streets. The principal street is 66 feet wide and has a surface as. hard as marble.
A High School building, of brick, was erected in 1886. During the year 1885 there were 56 new buildings erected in Leesburg, and the era of Brick Business Blocks is just commencing. Lakes Harris and Griffin are within a mile of the business center. The former is about 8x9 miles in size ; the latter 32x8. Steamers are run on Lakes Harris and Griffin, touching at all points.
The Leesburg Commercial, which succeeded the Sentinel, is a live, well-edited paper, full of news and interest to Leesburg.
"When the resources of the country shall have been developed- when the thousands of young groves which surround her shall have come into bearing, when the fruitless pines are cleared and their places taken by money-producing trees and vegetable gar- dens, when other railroads which are even now projected shall have been built, and when the broad bosoms of our beautiful lakes are churned by larger paddle wheels, we may confidently expect the metropolis of South Florida. This is no visionary dream, the past speaks for itself, and the future may be read in the past." .. 4
FRUITLAND PARK,
· Lying five miles northwest of Leesburg, is the largest English colony in Florida, which was planted in 1882 by Mr. G. C. Stapyl- ton, of Morrison, Stapylton & Co., bankers, of Leesburg, who are also agents for it. It is in a fine farming and fruit section, is a sta- tion of the F. S. Ry, and only a few minutes from Leesburg. There is a church (Episcopal), a club house, stores, and many other conveniences.
