SANFORD. [THE GATE CITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA. ]
Population 1886, 2,052; 1887, 2,384,
Sanford is delightfully situated on the west bank of Lake Mon- roe, head waters of the St. Johns River for large steamers, and is one of the most important towns of South Florida. It is 206 miles by the windings of the river and in a straight line 110 miles, and via Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West Railway 125 miles south of Jacksonville.
THE RAILROADS .- Sanford is also the northern terminus of the South Florida Railroad to Tampa on the Gulf; distance 115 miles. The Jacksonville, Tampa & Key West Railway, which was opened from Jacksonville to Palatka on the west bank of the St. Johns, Marcli 6, 1884, was completed to Sanford and Titusville, on the Indian River, in 1885, making a direct all-rail route, not only from Jacksonville, but all the cities of the north and west. It makes direct connection at Sanford with the South Florida Railroad, through to Tampa, and it is claimed forms not only 24 miles the shortest, but some three hours the quickest line to Tampa, Key West and Havana. These roads are broad gauge, built in the most substantial manner throughout, and are not excelled by any line in the country in their entire equipment. Buffet parlor cars are run between Jacksonville, Sanford and Tampa, and the journey consumes only a few hours. A branch of the South Florida Rail- road has been completed to Oviedo. The Sanford & Lake Eustis R. R., and the Orange Belt R. R., are in process of construction. A Union Depot is in contemplation and is very much needed. as five railroads place Sanford in direct and rapid communication with a large extent of country. The South Florida Railroad is the pioneer railroad of South Florida, and its success was emphasized recently on its change from a narrow to standard gauge, over which the "Fast Mail" goes from New York to Havana. The tourist in traveling over this road will note the even and wide road bed, the fine equipment and fast time made. Mr. B. R. Swoope, the Superintendent, manages this road by telegraph from his office in Sanford, and the traveler feels the influence of his masterly hand.
THE STEAMERS .- There are two lines of steamers plying the St. Johns River between this point and Jacksonville: The DeBary- Baya Merchants' Line and The People's Line. There is also a line to Rockledge, on the Indian River.
A COMPLETE SYSTEM OF WATER WORKS supplies the town with an adequate supply of good, clear water. The reservoir, contain- ing 40 acres, is 22 miles from the city. There is an excellent fire department.
THE LOCATION .- The city of Sanford is situated on a broad plain rising with remarkable evenness from the sandy shores of Lake Monroe, ascending to an elevation of forty-five feet in a distance of less than a mile. Beginning at Lake Monroe the streets are 330 feet apart. The following are the elevations from actual survey. taking

THE HOTELS .- The Sanford House is the largest hostelry here. It is only open winters, and its grounds lead down to the shores of the lake.
The Sirrine House is situated in the centre of the city, and has the patronage of railroad officials and prominent real estate men.
The Hotel San Leon is noted for its excellent table and polite at- tention, and is one of the headquarters for commercial men.
The Prevatt Hotel is on a prominent corner near the depot and steamboat landings, and was formerly The Tehan House.
The Buckheit House has long been known as a well established caravansary.
GAS WORKS. - Gas has recently been put in and other enterprises are in operation, including an ice factory.
Sanford has passed through "the awaiting development stage " and has facilities more than ordinary, which will naturally make it the business centre and distributing point for South Florida, being so situated by its geographical position as to command and attract the business of that portion of the state.
