PALATKA.

[THE GEM CITY.]

This is more distinctively a city of brick, so far as the business centre is concerned, than any city in Florida, if we may except Jacksonville. The visitor can more readily appreciate the appella- tion, " The Gem City," when he walks the streets and notes the fine brick business blocks, the well paved sidewalks, and the neatness and elegance of the surroundings. Business here seems to be done with a system, a regularity and quietness unlike most business marts. Here are found large brick stores and storehouses, where is located the heavy hardware and grain trade; for Palatka is one of the natural distributing points for the whole of South Florida, and owns her own railroad-The Florida Southern-which directly and indirectly reaches all the growing cities south as far as Charlotte Harbor and Tampa. Over this road, which is called the Orange Belt Route, it is said that Pullman cars run one hun- dred miles further south than on any road in the United States. A line of ocean steamships runs at regular intervals to Charleston, S. C., and there are river steamboats connecting with all points on the St. Johns and Ocklawaha rivers.

St. Johns & Halifax River Railroad runs from Rolleston, nearly opposite Palatka, to Ormond on the Halifax. A ferryboat runs at regular intervals between Palatka and Rolleston, connecting with this road. The Jacksonville Morning News says : "The completion of the White road, so called, to the Halifax River brings that fertile and healthful region into close association with the outer world and makes possible a future for it which its merits deserve. The various communities along the Halifax are exceptionally intelligent and enterprising, and now that it has a railway terminus, there is little doubt that the region will become exceedingly populous and abundantly wealthy." All of which will react to the benefit of Palatka.

The growth of Palatka, while not rapid, is substantial. It was settled in 1821, first as a trading post, and later it was a U. S. Mil- itary station, which was a base of operations during the Seminole War. Many of the great military men were at one time here, and some, who are now prominent, gained their first experience in the Seminole War. Generals Scott, Taylor and Gaines once had their headquarters here. General Sherman was located here as lieutenant, also Gen. Casey. The two last mentioned, in a recent visit, recog- nized several old landmarks despite the great improvements since made.

Palatka is located on the west bank of the St. Johns, 75 miles by the windings of the river and 56 miles by rail south of Jackson-

ville, 50 east of Gainesville and 68 north of Sanford. The city is built on a fine elevation, the slope to the river affording natural wharfage for the numerous steam and sailing craft which furnish abundant transportation facilities. The streets are regularly laid out, and both in the business and residence quarters lined with orange trees loaded with fruit or fragrant blossoms. During the season large shipments of oranges are made from this point. A dozen steamers stop at the wharves during the day, and the Jack- sonville, Tampa & Key West Railway affords rapid communication with Jacksonville and Sanford, to which latter named city this road was, in '85, completed. The business houses are large and well fitted up, the churches and halls spacious, and many of the residences surrounded by beautiful grounds, notable among which is the newly finished residence of Hon. Sherman Conant, general manager of the Florida Southern Railway.

During the year 1886, the St. Augustine & Palatka Railway was opened, forming an air line road between Palatka and St. Augus- tine. It runs from Sunny Point, a fine bluff with deep water, di- rectly opposite Palatka, 24 miles to a point on the St. Johns Rail- way of Florida, about six miles west of St. Augustine. It is standard guage and adds another laurel to Palatka's well won wreath. It has been said that "it is the unexpected that happens," so it is possible that St. Augustine, with its seventeen feet of water at high tide may after all, with this connecting link of railroad, be the seaport of Palatka and Southern Florida. The central office of this road is in the Astor block, Jacksonville, and Major Richard McLaughlin is president of the company which owns it.
