Conspicuous among several of its educational institutions is the East Florida Seminary, State Normal School and Military Insti- tute. A new public graded school building has been completed during the past year, which is like all other buildings recently erected here-a credit to the city. In addition to the Court House, there is a new bank building of Messrs. H. F. Dutton & Co., bankers, built of pressed brick, in 1885, and one of the most elegant buildings for the purposes intended to be found in Florida. Among other brick blocks recently erected may be mentioned those belonging to Endel Bros., General John Varnum, J. Simonson, W. Porter, and numerous others -- all on the public square-which add much to the beauty and convenience of that thoroughfare.
The importance of Gainesville as a railroad, commercial and educational center, and as a desirable place of business and residence, is attracting general attention.
One of the attractions of Gainesville is Simonson's Opera House, Skating rink, Artesian Well, and Bathing Establishment, the most complete combination of the kind in the South. The water is said to be a speciffc for chronic diarrhoea, kidney diseases, bronchial affections, old sores, &c., and has sulphur, iron, mag- nesium and alum qualities.
The United States Land Office is situated here where all the lands in Florida, belonging to the United States, are entered.
Up to a comparatively brief period Gainesville had the reputa- tion of being a slow, conservative city, but its recent growth and enterprise is being recognized generally.
