TAMPA.

[THE METROPOLIS OF THE GULF.]

After reviewing most if not all the representative cities in East and South Florida, we now come to Tampa, the last, but not by any means the least. She is the Metropolis of the Gulf, as Jack- sonville is of the Atlantic, and is fast emphasizing that quotation, "The last shall be first." For years she has waited the arrival of the iron horse, and now, from an obscure settlement, reached from the north by a tedious journey of several days from Jacksonville, she is accessible, after a few short hours, by fast express trains. Not only this, but her praises are sung and her name "hung on the outer walls" by those indefatigable and enterprising railroad men throughout the north and west, and every depot and railroad office repeat the names in many colors. "Havana and Tampa." Since the publication of our last year's Directory, the brick era in building up Tampa has commenced, which is illustrated in several large brick business blocks, notable among which is that of The First National Bank of Tampa. A vast improvement has been made in the style of architecture of the homes of the people.

There are five foreign steamers arriving at this port per week. Four of them run to Havana, and one to Nassau. There is also a regular line to New Orleans, and several steamers running up and down the coast or in the bay. For two years or more Tampa had only one railroad connecting her with the outside world, but The Florida Railway and Navigation Company are fast completing their road direct to the city, the passenger depot to be on the old Fort Brooke Reservation, 239 miles from Jacksonville, the same distance it is claimed that it is via Jacksonville, Tampa and Key West Railway and South Florida Railroad. While to get to the deepest water the road will be extended two miles farther, ter- minating on the spot that Senator Yulee selected for the same purpose thirty years ago.

The shipping-importing and exporting trade of Tampa-is larger than it is generally supposed. Following is a table which gives a rough estimate showing the amount of duties, that would have been collected at this port, had this been a port of entry, or if the immediate transportation act had been in effect, from the 1st day of January, 1886, to the 15th day of November, 1886 :

1,402 Bales Tobacco | 135 lbs. per Bale | 189,270 Ibs. at 35 c. per It. | Duties, $66,244 50

Statement showing the number of tons arrived at this port, in- cluding both foreign and coastwise, (yet all arrivals are coastwise,

Ex-Governor George F. Drew and W. B. Clarkson, Esq., have recently become largely interested in Tampa.

The City of Tampa is situated at the head of Hillsborough Bay, one of the two branches of Tampa Bay proper, 40 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, and at the mouth of Hillsborough River, which is a navigable stream for ten miles, large sea-going vessels daily landing their freight and passengers at its wharves.

The history of the place dates back to 1824, and it was originally known as Fort Brooke, which was a military fort during the early Indian wars, and from its delightful and healthy situation has been retained by the military authorities as the sanitary station for the garrison of Key West.

Fort Brooke is a romantic place and is ornamented with grand old oaks large enough to be called the monarchs of the forest.
