The town was first laid in 1847 in one-acre-square blocks, with the streets 80 feet broad, which insures continued air circulation and healthfulness.

It is at the southern terminus of the South Florida Railroad, 115 miles from Sanford, and 239 by rail from Jacksonville. The first passenger train arrived in Tampa Dec. 10, 1883, since which time it has increased largely in population and influence. The popu- lation on the publication of our '86 directory was 2,376. To-day it is 3,684, or if we add the estimated population of Ybor City 2,- 000, Tampa's population will reach 5,684.

YBOR CITY.

Having written of Tampa proper this sketch would be incom- plete if its magic suburb, Ybor City, was not mentioned. At first it was considered an appendage to the old settled city of Tampa, but already the new city of Ybor is assuming proportions of no mean magnitude, which may, in the near future, rival in its own peculiar way its sister city.

On the 8th day of October, 1885, the first tree was felled in the forest which covered the site on which Ybor City is now building. A few weeks prior to the date above mentioned, V. Martinez Ybor & Co., cigar manufacturers of Havana, Key West and New York, purchased a tract of land adjacent to the city of Tampa, consist- ing of thirty acres, on which to begin operations ; but the tract proved only to be a nucleus and in a very short time they extended their purchases ; and at present they own 111 acres in this one block, and but a short distance east they now own a tract of 1.000 acres, and smaller tracts in surrounding localities.

The number of dwelling houses erected are 232, ranging in cost from $300 to $3,500. The actual expenditure in buildings and im- provements by this company already exceeds $250,000, while

buildings continue to go up as rapidly as material can be procured and carpenters can build them. The magnificent three story brick factory, is one of the best and most commodious structures in the State and affords ample room for about 600 employees. Shade trees have been planted on either side of the wide streets, the dwelling houses are being enclosed by neat picket fences, side- walks being laid, and Ybor City now presents all the attractions of a modern city. V. Martinez Ybor, the senior member of the firm, owns a fine orange grove on one side of the city, on which he has recently erected a palatial family residence for his family. The Company have a complete fire department, an engine house, constructed for the purpose and situated near the factory and cen- tral portion of the city. The sanitary condition of the place is kept in good order at the expense of the Company. Thus it will be seen that the proprietors of Ybor City are fully alive to the in- terests of their people and have a proper conception of their duties.

V. Martinez Ybor, Edward Manrara and Edward Martinez Ybor, compose the firm of V. Martinez Ybor & Co., of Havana, New York, and Ybor City, importers and dealers in Havana leaf tobacco and manufacturers of strictly pure Havana leaf cigars and cigarettes.

In the Ybor City factory this firm is turning out 900,000 cigars a month, but the capacity of the factory is one and one-half millions, which will soon be reached. At present their weekly pay-roll to cigarmakers and other employees of the factory amounts to $4, 700 and $4.800, but it must be understood that this amount includes no part of the amount weekly expended on the erection of build- ings, improvements and employees required to carry on this work.

Following is a list of the larger business houses which have grown up with the city, including the firm of Messrs. Sanchez & Haya, which also manufactures cigars and cigarettes at this point : Juan Terry & Co., Gonzales & Costello, Gibson & Breghar, Miller & Henderson, La Economie Cooperative Association, José Agusti, General Merchandise ; Yarrino Callos, Koss & Co., Bakeries ; Luis Serreno, E. A. Brantley, Pablo Sendoya, Emilio Garcia, Bars ; Max- imo M. Diaz, Drugs ; Fernando Oceguera, Francisco Bencomo, Bar- ber Shops, Hotel de la Havana; F. M. Robles, José Gonzales, Butchers ; Manuel Perez, Notions ; J. P. Garner & Son, General Merchandise ; Eli P. Bloche, Millinery ; Antonio Menendez, An- tonio Salazar, Urbano Gonzales, Restaurants ; Lorenzo Garcia, Dry Goods ; P. F. Smith, Jos. Roberts, R. H. Gazner, William E. Goode, Boarding Houses ; John Hamilton, Fruit Store : Gladden & Hoffner, William E. Goode, William Stacy, R. H. Garner. R. L. Sims, Contractors and Builders ; A. Entenza, Fish and Ice.

It needs no effort to attract attention to its importance and vision- ary speculation to convince the reader of the promising future of Ybor. Facts and figures speak for themselves. We only desire to impress upon our readers that New Ybor City is adjacent to the City of Tampa, and that the latter city is directly enjoying the benefits of the great capital and enterprise that is being expended. It is this enterprise that has contributed largely in keeping "dull times" away from Tampa during the past year, and which con- . tributes with many other advantages to its greatness in the future.
