One of the attractive features of this city is The New Putnam House, which was built last season and opened by Mr. Oscar G. Barron, that well known and long established White Mountain Hotel proprietor, who continues as proprietor of the New Putnam. It is 234 feet in front with an L 281 feet long, three stories in height. There is another L 181 feet in length. The dining room is 120x42 feet and open wood fire places are in all the public rooms and many of the parlors and chambers. There are elevators, steam heat, electric lights, billiard halls, artesian wells, hot and cold water, sulphur and other baths, a tropical garden in the interior court, around which the hotel is built and where fountains lend an en- chantment to the scene.
Then there is a brick structure, the Hotel Phoenix, opened the year round, by Smith & Edwards, with Capt. Joe Smith as man- ager, and who does not know " Capt. Joe ?"
The Carlton, by Mr. Andrew Shelley, another large hotel.
Palatka has a daily paper, The Palatka Daily News, which also issues a weekly edition ; The Palatka Herald ; The Southern Sun and The Florida Cultivator.
The people of Palatka believe and have an abiding faith in the Gem City. They are not so demonstrative as some other cities, but they work together and in unison for the general good. They build their own churches, their own hotels, support well their newspapers, build their own railroads, have good bank accounts, entertain royally, and whatever they do they do quietly and suc- cessfully.
