This is one of the most efficient fire departments in the South, and has an equipment inferior to none. It is supplied with "Hale's Patent Swinging Harness," which enables them to harness and get in motion within from five to seven seconds. They have made a record that they may well be proud of, having at one time. Octo- ber 14th, 1886, made a run from the general office to Bay c Cedar, within one minute, the time was kept by a stop watch, and is accurate. On another occasion an alarm was sent in from Julia c Caroline, one mile from engine house, within five minutes they were playing on the fire, and in six additional minutes the fire was extinguished. These are figures which not only the firemen, but the whole City of Jacksonville, may well be proud. The Gam- ble Fire Alarm is used ; the signals being, one tap. wire out of or- der, and so arranged that the chief may know whether it is an east or west wire, and about what distance from office. Two taps sig- nifies that the fire is extinguished. Three taps general alarm. The boxes are stationed and numbered as follows : 13. Bay c Ce- dar ; 14, Bay c Hogan ; 15, Bay c Pine ; 16, Bay c Newnan : 17. Bay c Liberty ; 22, Church c Cedar : 23, Hogan c Duval : 24, Pine c Ashley ; 25, Newnan c Monroe ; 26, Monroe c Washington ; 33, Bay c Water; 34, Julia c Caroline ; 35, State c Pine : 36, Beaver c Newnan; 37 Beaver c Liberty.
