COMPANY G
was raised chiefly in Lee county, though many of its men came from Henry. Some had been in the "Lancers" re- ferred to under Companies I and L. The work was done by Tullis and Brown, who became the first officers, aided by Davis and Rodgers, who later became Captains, and Levee, who became First Sergeant. It was organized directly for the Fourth Cavalry, and appeared in Camp Harlan about the middle of November, 1861. It was mustered in November 27, and assigned to the First Battalion as second company.
In the Vicksburg campaign, at Milliken's Bend, La., May I, 1863, it was detached for courier service along the lines in Louisiana, and was kept in that service until the fall of Vicksburg. When the regiment joined Wilson's Cavalry Corps, in February, 1865, it was again detached, as escort to Brevet Major-General Upton, commanding division, and so continued till the end of the war, while both its lieutenants were placed on General Upton's staff.
Company G had 3 captains, 3 first and 4 second lieuten- ants, 43 non-commissioned officers, and 126 privates; or, deducting for repetitions by promotion in the company and transfer to other companies, it had 8 officers and 141 en- listed men, 149 in all, there being 76 in the original com- pany and 73 recruits.
The losses from all causes were 78, leaving 71 to be mus- tered out at the end. Among the losses were 4 killed in action, 15 died of disease (I a prisoner of war), and 21 dis- charged or transferred to the Invalid Corps and Veteran Reserve Corps for disability caused by disease or wounds. There were 5 wounded, 8 captured, and 2 both wounded and captured in action.
