COMPANY B
was composed mostly of men of Delaware county, though many came from Buchanan, Dubuque, Clayton and other counties. It was raised in August, 1861, chiefly by John H. Peters, who became Captain. It was intended for the Second Iowa Cavalry, and went to its rendezvous at Camp Mcclellan, near Davenport, but, for some reason not now known, did not join that regi- ment. It remained in Camp Mcclellan until the Fourth Cavalry was authorized, when it at once offered to join, and moved to Mt. Pleasant, arriving there with Company A, Oct. 17, 1861. As the second company in the regiment it was given the letter " B" and assigned to the Third Battalion and to the left of the regimental line.
It was mustered in Nov. 23, 1861. It had 3 captains, 3 first lieutenants, 5 second lieutenants, 46 non-commissioned officers, and 188 privates; or, deducting for repetitions by promotion in the company and transfer to other companies, it had 7 officers and 155 enlisted men, 162 in all, of whom 92 were original members and 70 recruits.
Its losses from all causes were 91, leaving 73 to be mustered out as a company at the end. Among the losses were 5 killed in action, I by accident, 18 died of disease (4 of them prisoners of war), and 19 discharged for disability caused by disease or wounds. It had 18 wounded, 12 captured, and I both wounded and captured, in action.
Of the original company 49 became Veterans, and, besides the 3 original officers, it had 5 men promoted to commissions, 3 in the company and 2 outside.
