Littler, George L. In a report of the regt. by the Adjt .- Gen. of Iowa this name appears as "enlisted Aug. 27, 1864,"
213
FOURTH IOWA CAVALRY
with the remark, "Never joined the Co. Mustered out Aug. 29, 1865." Such a man was never known in the regt. and never appeared on any of its rolls. He may have been an " unassigned " recruit, detained somewhere ir- regularly on detached service, but that is only a guess. The same name is found as that of a private in Co. F, 8th Iowa Inf., but enl. Oct. 1, 1861.
Wilder, James W. An early report of the Adjt .- Gen. of Iowa shows this name in Co. K, 4th Cav., with the remark, " Died Sep. 8, 1862, at Batesville, Ark." There is no other evidence. The name is not on any roll of any co. of the regt., no such man was known to the surviving officers of Co. K, and at the date given for his death Batesville must have been held by the enemy. He may have been at that time a prisoner of war from some other regt.

SUMMARY
The history of the regiment mentioned in the Preface contains (at pages 575 and 576) tables of statistics which, in some items, have been found incorrect. It was compiled from official reports based upon the original rolls, but, in examining the record of each member of the regiment for the purposes of this book, many errors and contradictions in those reports have been disclosed, which, so far as they affect the figures, are here corrected.
The men rejected by the mustering officer, who are included in that table because they were on the original rolls, are omitted from this. So are those found to be deserters from other com- mands.
