COMPANY M

was enlisted in Jefferson county, in October, 1861, directly for the Fourth Cavalry. It was raised chiefly under the influence of Abial R. Pierce, who became Captain, and who had been a Captain of the " Home Guards" in the " Border War," in August, mentioned in the accounts of Cos. D and K. Some of the men of this company were also in that service. Frederick S. Whiting had been recruiting for a battery of artillery, but joined Pierce with his men, and hecame First Lieutenant.

The company reached Camp Harlan at the end of October, and organized itself there November 2d, electing as its first officers Pierce, Whiting, and Aaron J. Newby.

It was mustered in November 25, 1861, and assigned to the Third Battalion, third company.

It had 2 captains, 2 first and 2 second lieutenants, 39 non- commissioned officers, and 117 privates; or, deducting for re- petitions due to promotion in the company and transfer to another company, it had 5 officers and 153 enlisted men, 158 in all, of whom 89 were the original members and 69 recruits.

· Its losses from all causes were 77, leaving 81 to be mustered out on the last roll. Among the losses were I killed in action, 20 died of disease (1 a prisoner of war), and 23 discharged or trans- ferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps for disability caused by dis- ease or wounds. There were 6 wounded and 2 captured in action. . Of the original company 52 became Veterans, 2 were pro- moted to commissions in the company (besides the original 3) and 3 to commissions in other commands, one of the latter in the regular army. One of the recruits became a cadet at West Point after he was mustered out of this company, and in due time an officer in the regular army.

Captain Abial R. Pierce, Lockridge. Joined Nov. 2, 1861. Com. Capt. to date Nov. 25, 1861. Prom. Maj. Sep. 13, 1863.
