COMPANY E
was raised originally for a regiment of " Mounted Rifles " pro- jected by General Frémont, then in command of the department. . Alonzo B. Parkell began to enroll such a company in June, 1861, under authority from Governor Kirkwood, and held it until he became its Captain in the Fourth Cavalry. His headquarters were at Grinnell, and the men were found mostly in Poweshiek county. But the idea of "Mounted Rifles " was abandoned, and the company was offered a choice between the Fourth Cavalry and the Fourteenth Infantry. It chose the cavalry, and entered Camp Harlan October 24, 1861.
It is interesting that a considerable number of this company were students, the most of them in Iowa College at Grinnell.
It was mustered in November 23, 1861, and assigned to the Third Battalion as first company.
It had 3 captains, 4 first and 5 second lieutenants, 52 non- commissioned officers and 90 privates; or, deducting for repe- titions by promotion in the company, it had 7 officers and 138 enlisted men, 145 in all, there being 95 in the original company and 50 recruits.
The losses from all causes were 76, leaving 69 to be mustered out as a company at the end. Among the losses were I killed in action, 12 died of disease (I a prisoner of war), and 21 discharged or transferred to Invalid Corps and Veteran Reserve Corps for disability caused by disease or wounds. There were 6 wounded in action and 2 captured in action or by the enemy.
Of the original company 52 became Veterans in December, 1863. Besides the original 3 officers, this company furnished 9 others, 4 in succession in the company, 3 to other places in the regiment, and 2 to other commands.
