COMPANY F
was raised in Wapello, Mahaska, and Marion counties, with a few men from Henry and other counties. The work was done by Edward F. Winslow, Thomas J. Zollars, and William A. Heacock, who became the first officers, and three others who became Ser- geants and later officers-Elias B. Woodruff, Albert W. Chaney, and John T. Reynolds.
It was raised directly for this regiment, reached Camp Harlan about October 25, 1861, and was among the first to be ready for muster. It was mustered in November 23, 1861, and assigned to the Second Battalion, second company.
It had 3 captains, 3 first and 5 second lieutenants, 48 non- commissioned officers, and 98 privates ; or, deducting for repe- titions by promotion in the company, it had 8 officers, 43 non- commissioned officers, and 98 privates, 149 in all, of whom 95 were original members and 54 recruits.
Its losses from all causes were 80, leaving 69 to be disbanded on the last roll. Among the losses were 5 killed in action, 12 died of disease, and 20 discharged or transferred to the Invalid Corps and Veteran Reserve Corps for disability caused by dis- ease or wounds. It had 9 wounded, 10 captured, and 6 both wounded and captured in action.
Of the original company 43 became Veterans in December, 1863; and, in addition to the original 3 officers, 13 men were promoted to commissions, 5 in the company and 8 in other com- mands.
