COMPANY C
was the first of the companies which were raised directly for the Fourth Cavalry. As soon as Colonel Porter received au- thority to form the regiment, and partly under his influence, enlistments were made for this company at Mt. Pleasant. A large majority of its members lived in that town and the sur- rounding country. Simeon D. Swan (Major) and Orrin Miller (Captain) are credited with the greater part of the enlistments.
The company entered Camp Harlan Nov. 1, 1861, under Cap- tain Miller, was mustered in November 25, 1861, and upon organization was assigned to the Second Battalion, first com- pany, so becoming the " Color Company."
It had 3 captains, 3 first and 4 second lieutenants, 42 non- commissioned officers, and 105 privates; or, deducting for repe- titions by promotion in the company and transfer to another company, it had 8 officers and 146 enlisted men, 154 in all. Of these 92 composed the original company and 62 were recruits.
Losses from all causes were 78, leaving 76 to be mustered out at the last. Among the losses were 3 killed in action, 2 by acci- dent, 9 died of disease, and 24 discharged or transferred to Invalid Corps and Veteran Reserve Corps for disability caused by disease or wounds. There were 10 wounded, 2 captured, and 2 both wounded and captured, in action.
Of the original company 49 became Veterans, and in addi- tion to its original 3 officers, 11 of its enlisted men were promoted to commissions, 5 in succession in the company, 5 elsewhere in the regiment, and I in another command. It also furnished 6 others to the Non-commissioned Staff.
From Aug. 1, 1864, to Dec. 20, 1864, this company was de- tached for service in the Provost-Guard at Memphis, Tenn.
