COMPANY H

found the greater number of its men in Chickasaw county. Henry supplied about half as many, and Mitchell, Bremer, and Iowa sent each a substantial number. A few of the men enlisted in August and September, 1861, for cavalry service; but when the company was large enough, in the latter part of October, it was determined to organize it for the Fourth Cavalry. It was recruited chiefly by Crawford and Troy, who became Captain and First Lieutenant, aided by Haskell, who became Second Lieutenant, and Tinkham, who became Sergeant-Major of the Third Battalion.

The company entered Camp Harlan early in November, 1861, and was there organized. It was mustered in November 26, 1861, and assigned to the Third Battalion as second company.

It had 3 captains, 4 first and 6 second lieutenants, 43 non- commissioned officers, and 169 privates; or, deducting for repe- titions by promotion in the company and transfer to other companies, it had 8 officers and 161 enlisted men, 169 in all, of whom 91 were original members and 78 recruits.

Its losses from all causes were 77, leaving 92 to be mustered out on the last roll. Among its losses were 4 killed in action, 2 by accident, 27 died of disease (I a prisoner of war), and 16 dis- charged or transferred to the Invalid Corps for disability caused by disease or wounds. It had 9 wounded in action and 4 cap- tured.

Of the original company 47 became Veterans, being a greater proportion of its eligible men than any other company reën- listed. In reward for this achievement it was assigned to the Colors, carrying from that time the regimental standard and a large silk flag presented by the Loyal Women's League of Iowa to the Fourth Cavalry as the first Iowa regiment to reënlist as " Veterans."
