COMPANY K
was enlisted at Mt. Pleasant directly for the Fourth Cavalry, and the original company was composed entirely of men living in Henry county. A portion of them had belonged to the " Home Guards " mentioned under Company D, and in that organization, under Captain Drummond, had marched to Athens in Missouri in the "Border War," in August, 1861. It was raised by the three men who became its first officers, aided by Van- orsdol, who became First Lieutenant.
It assembled early in October, 1861, entered Camp Harlan about October 25, and was mustered in Nov. 25, 1861, and as- signed to the First Battalion as fourth company.
It had 2 captains, 2 first and 3 second lieutenants, 50 non- commissioned officers, and 132 privates; or, deducting for repe- titions due to promotion in the company, I transfer to another company, and I taken as deserter from another regiment, it had 7 officers and 135 enlisted men, in all 142, of whom 85 were the original company, I was added from the Field and Staff, and 56 were recruits.
The losses from all causes were 72, leaving 71 to be mustered on the last roll. Among the losses were 5 killed in action, I by accident, 11 died of disease, and 23 discharged or transferred to the Invalid Corps for disability caused by disease or wounds. There were 14 wounded, 8 captured, and 2 both wounded and captured in action.
It had 36 Veterans under the reenlistment orders, and, besides its 3 original officers, it furnished 5 others, 3 to the suc- cession in the company and 2 to other commands.
In the assignment of horses this company was originally given the blacks, and so was known humorously as " the Black-horse Cavalry."
