UNASSIGNED RECRUITS

A number of recruits who were enlisted for the regiment never joined, were not assigned to particular companies, and so did not appear on any company or regimental roll. Some died in hos- pital at rendezvous in Iowa, and perhaps some on the way to the camp of the regiment. Others may have been put on detached service, and so appear only on reports made out of the regiment; but it is probable, also, that some were " bounty-jumpers " or habitual " deserters," enlisting at different places under different names, to get the bounties or out of native cussedness. So no doubt some of the names are false.

To give all known means of identification the whole record in each case is printed here. The place next after the name is the residence in Iowa given on enlistment.

REJECTED

The first rolls of the companies (except D and E) contain the names of men who were enlisted but who were not mustered in. They were " rejected " by the mustering officer, some for physi- cal incapacity, some as being under or over the military age, but the most because they were not present at the muster. In all there were 52. Some who were minors succeeded later in getting . in and some of the absent returned and were accepted, and the names of these appear in their companies.

The names of the others are not given here because, although some of them no doubt really tried to get into the regiment, it is certain that others, probably the most, did not, and it is not possible to say which are entitled to the credit and which are not.

ENROLLED BY ERROR

Eight names appear in certain rolls and reports in the office of the Adjutant-General of Iowa as of men in the Fourth Cav- alry, though no such men were ever in it.

The first five are found in other regiments. They may have intended to go into this regiment, perhaps enlisted for it, but later, and before muster-in, chose other commands.

As to the remaining three no explanation is found except in the suggestion of clerical blunders. The men may have belonged to other regiments; if so, it must be that some careless official failed to get the whole of their records in the right places.

Jones, William. This name appears on the last (the muster-out) roll of G, with the remark, " Awaiting trial for forgery." It is not in the proper place alphabetically, but at the foot of the roll and in a handwriting different from the remainder. No other roll or report of Co. G or of the regt. at any time contains any evidence of the exist- ence of such a man. The surviving officer and others of the company have no memory of such a man or of any man under such a charge.
