COMPANY L
like Company I, grew from a company raised for Pleyel's (Ist U. S.) Lancers. This company was assembled at Bur- lington in August, September, and October, 1861, under Cap- tain Harris and Lieutenant Woods, and was composed of men from many different counties of the State. When the Lancers regiment was disbanded, November 16, 1861, the officers and a majority of the men agreed to join the Fourth Cavalry, and went to Mt. Pleasant in a body for that purpose, arriving November 19th. Others who had been in the Lancers afterward joined there; the company was thereupon reorganized as L, was mustered in November 25, 1861, and assigned to the Second Battalion as fourth company.
It had 3 captains, 4 first and 4 second lieutenants, 44 non-com- missioned officers, and 129 privates; or, deducting for repetitions by promotion in the company and transfer to other companies, it had 8 officers and 130 enlisted men, 138 in all, of whom 69 were original members and 69 recruits.
Its losses from all causes were 71, leaving 67 to be mustered out on the last roll. Among the losses were 4 killed in action, I by accident, Io died of disease, and 12 discharged for disability caused by disease or wounds. It had 13 wounded and 5 cap- tured in action or by the enemy.
Of the original company 35 became Veterans, 4 were pro- moted to commissions in the company (in addition to the orig- inal 3 officers) and 2 in other commands.
