When the Fourth Cavalry was authorized the most of these men, with a party from Marshall, in the same county, led by John T. Tucker, organized a company for it. They chose Spearman for Captain and Coiner and Tucker as Lieutenants, and entered Camp Harlan October 21, 1861.

The company was mustered in November 25, 1861, and as- signed to the First Battalion as the third company.

It had 2 captains, 4 first and 4 second lieutenants, 40 non-com- missioned officers and 113 privates; or, deducting for repetitions by promotion in the company and transfer to other companies, it had 8 officers and 135 enlisted men, 143 in all. The original company numbered 82, I officer came from another company, and there were 60 recruits.

The losses from all causes were 69, leaving 74 to be mustered out on the last roll. Among the losses were I killed in action, I I died of disease, and 22 discharged or transferred to the Invalid Corps and Veteran Reserve Corps for disability caused by dis- ease or wounds. It had 17 wounded, 4 captured, and I both wounded and captured, in action.

Of the original company 49 became Veterans in December, 1863; and, in addition to the original 3 officers, 4 of its men be- came officers in the company and 3 in other commands.
