COMPANY D
grew out of a body of "Home Guards" organized at Liberty, in the southeast part of Henry county, early in the summer of 1861, for the defense of the Missouri border. That body was raised chiefly by Cornelius F. Spearman and Lot Abraham, who went with it and other volunteers on an expedition into Missouri, at Athens on the Des Moines river, in August, 1861, to counteract a threatened invasion of Iowa by "Secessionists."
