COMPANY A

was originally raised for the Second Iowa Cavalry. It was called the " Sears' Rangers," in honor of E. H. Sears, a highly respected judge and patriotic citizen of Sidney. The men came from Fremont, Page and Mills counties, and were enlisted chiefly by Benjamin Rector, John Guylee, and J. Marshall Rust, all of whom were Methodist " preachers," Rector being also a law- yer. A large part of the men had been, in July; 1861, on an expedition into Missouri, mounted and armed, to quell a " Seces- sionist " rising there, and they formed this company immediately upon their return.

Under the Governor's orders the men were sworn into the State service, a part at Hawleyville, August 9, and a part at Sidney, August 10, 1861 ; and all went into camp August 26, near Sidney. On September 5 it set out to join the Second Cavalry at Davenport. The transportation being by farm wagons and saddle-horses, it took ten days to reach Davenport. In the meantime the Second was filled; and the Third, the last cavalry regiment then authorized, was also full.

The company remained in Camp Mcclellan, near Davenport, one month, until the War Department ordered the raising of the Fourth Cavalry. It at once offered for that regiment and moved to Mt. Pleasant, arriving October 17, 1861; and beginning immediately the construction of Camp Harlan.

It was mustered in November 23, 1861, and assigned to the First Battalion, first company, and to the right of the regimental line.

It had 4 captains, 3 first and 3 second lieutenants, 45 non-com- missioned officers, and 130 privates; or, deducting for repetitions by promotion in the company, 8 officers and 144 enlisted men, in all 152, of whom 93 were the original members and 59 recruits.

Its losses from all causes were 96, leaving 56 to be mustered out on the last roll.
