They have been ably assisted by Superintendent of Schools Adolph O. Christiansen and the school teachers of the Primary and High Schools. We urge complete coopera- tion from all Citizens with this Board as they are governed entirely, not by local rules and regulations, but by Federal orders.
The Randolph Unit of the Massachusetts State Guard under the leadership of Captain Elmer J. Delorey have increased their enlistments so that Randolph has one of the outstanding Units in the Commonwealth.
The Randolph Red Cross Unit under the leadership of Chairman John M. Pero, Disaster Chairman Walter C. Kane, have conducted Red Cross activities in a most com- mendable manner. To these men and their assistants, Cap- tain Charlotte Diauto of the Motor Corp, Mrs. Ralph E. Macleod in charge of the knitting, Mrs. Harry Williamson, in charge of the sewing groups, Miss Viola J. Ruggles in charge of the Canteen Corp, Mrs. C. Lloyd Claff head of the Home Nursing, and Henry Corp in charge of First Aid Classes and to all Randolph men and women who have worked untiringly for the success of Red Cross activities in Randolph, the Town is greatly indebted.

ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT
The Randolph Emergency War Board, Martin E. Young Chairman, Walter J. Good, James D. Mackinnon, George N. Welch, Albert C. Wilde, have given of their time and efforts in salvage activities and have assisted the War effort considerable during the past year.
Over 400 men and women of Randolph are serving in the Armed Services of their country and Randolph is exceedingly proud of each and every one of these Patriots. In the following pages a partial list of those serving in the defense of our country is printed. The Board is indebted to Murray A. Lewis who has worked untiringly in the compilation of this Honor Roll.
Randolph honors Flight Sergeant Robert Davis and Private Alfred Essiembre who were Randolph's first men to make the supreme sacrifice in World War II. We fer- vently hope and pray that Ensign Victor Lewis, Geoffrey L. Marconi, James Nelson and Thomas Fogo, who have been reported missing in action may soon be heard from and once again return to their native town.
We desire to thank all Department Heads and the Citizens of Randolph who have so splendidly cooperated with us during the past year.
CHARLES F. BLAKELY, RALPH H. HUTCHINSON, THEODORE S. LUDDINGTON, Selectmen of Randolph.

PUBLIC LIBRARY
To the Citizens of Randolph :
Pursuant to the provisions of Article 3 of the By-Laws of the Turner Free Library, this report, for the calendar year 1942 and being the sixty-seventh annual report, is submitted, showing the condition of the trust consisting of the building, library, and funds, together with the reports of the Librarian and Treasurer and so much of the reports submitted to the Trustees by the various committees as seems of general interest.
104
TOWN OF RANDOLPH, MASS.
The Library Committee reports that the books, charts and furnishings are in good condition and that all books belonging to the library are accounted for by the Librarian.
The Building Committee reports that during 1942 various defense activities were installed in the building and are still located there. These are a Report Center in the basement, a Medical and Surgical Center above the Report Center and State Guard quarters in the third story. A very substantial amount of work was done to render the portions of the building occupied by the two units first above mentioned suitable for their use, the expense of which was borne by funds allocated to the use of those units and was not derived from the library's own resources or from the appropriation made by the Town for the use of the library.
The Buiding Committee further reports that in ad- dition to the foregoing there have been a number of more or less routine repairs, including the painting of the wood trim on the outside of the building, which last is not com- pleted and has had to be suspended because of weather conditions.
On December 22nd a little after 11 o'clock in the evening a fire occurred in the lower part of the building. Fortunately it was discovered by members of a civilian defense organization before it had time to assume large proportions. It was very promptly and efficiently extin- guished by the Fire Department. The loss was compara- tively small and is believed to be fully covered by insurance.
This fire occurred after some severely cold weather, during which a water pipe in the third story burst, so that after the ice had melted, water ran down through the building and collected on the ground floor. There were some electric wires under this floor and apparently the water, .
105
ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT
seeping through the floor, short-circuited these wires and started the blaze.
A couple of days before the fire and during the severe cold weather, there was considerable freezing of water in various parts of the plumbing other than the pipe above referred to and this caused a substantial amount of damage, which unfortunately is not covered by insurance.
In 1942 the Town, having in mind the universal shrink- age in income from investments which is still reflected in the Library's income and the further fact that defense units are occupying parts of the library building which in the past have been a source of rental income to the library and in view of the constant need of repairs which exists in the case of all buildings, appropriated $1500 for the use of the library. The library used during the year only $1,296.56 of the appropriation. The Trustees ask for the current year a similar appropriation of $1500, to meet the need of general and special repairs to the exterior and interior of the building and to the furnishings and fixtures, as such repairs may from time to time be necessary, and for the general purposes of the library.
The Librarian reports a loss in circulation but, as she points out, such a loss is only natural in view of the extent to which people are now engaged in war work. She also deals in some detail with the work that the library has been doing for children. The success of this work has been most gratifying.
The Trustees take this opportunity to add their thanks 1 to those of the Librarian to the donors of books given to the library and they further express their thanks for the loyal services of the Librarian, Mrs. Eunice B. Martin, and of her assistants, Miss Pearl Massie and Miss Virginia · Baker, and of Miss Patricia Vogel, Miss Eleanor McNeil,
106
TOWN OF RANDOLPH, MASS.
and Miss Marguerite Taylor who have helped with the Children's Department. They also greatly appreciate the assistance given by the faculty and students of the Stetson High School to which the Librarian refers in her report.
A copy of each of the following reports is hereunto subjoined :
Report of the Librarian.
Report of the Treasurer, showing the invest- ment of the funds and the receipts and expenditures of the library.
Report of the Finance Committee.
Respectfully submitted,
SETH T. CRAWFORD, President, Board of Trustees.

ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTH ANNUAL REPORT
REPORT OF LIBRARIAN OF TURNER FREE LIBRARY
To the Trustees of the Turner Free Library :
I have the honor to submit my report for the year ending December 31, 1942.
We have added 279 volumes to the library making the accession number 35,698, number of books purchased, 243, number of gifts, 36. The total circulation of books was 15,645. Practically all libraries are reporting losses in circulation due to so many people being engaged in war work. The number of unbound magazines loaned, 450.
On August 14 we started our renewal of borrowers' cards, the three year limit having expired. To date 195 cards have been renewed and 430 new cards issued.
The Victory Book Campaign has been a great success and we thank all who were so kind in donating the 1073 books and the many magazines which have been sent to the men in the service. We wish to thank the members of the Motor Corps who delivered the books to the Brockton Library for distribution.
On May 9 Miss Baker resigned to accept another pos- ition. Her resignation was accepted with regret as she had been a faithful and efficient helper in the main library and as the children's Librarian. We were fortunate in obtaining Miss Patricia Vogel who stayed with us until October. Miss Eleanor McNeil and Miss Marguerite Taylor have helped us since then.
During July and August Miss Vogel conducted a chil- dren's story hour on Saturday mornings. There were seven sessions, the first was July 11. On August 11, 51 children attended. The children's ages ranged from 3 to

11 years. All who could write signed their names and every one had a good time. We hope to continue the story hour in the near future.

This year our library observed National Book Week by having a children's book display. Under the direction of Miss Vogel and Miss McNeil, hand drawn posters and book exhibits were tastefully arranged. We had a table of old favorites and groups of fairy tales, history, hobby, nature and fun books. Saturday, November 21, Miss Vogel had a story hour which was well attended and enjoyed. Among cur new books were two prize winners of 1942, "Make Way For The Ducklings" by McCloskey, and "The Matchlock Gun" by Edmunds. Adults as well as children seemed to be interested in the display.
We have a number of up-to-the-minute books on world affairs, technical subjects, home defense, first aid and cooking, also pamphlets on all subjects sent by the Govern- ment.
We wish to thank Mr. Gilgan, Miss Brennan and the pupils of Stetson High School who made it possible for us to have the bulletins typed of our new books each month for distribution to the public.
The Librarian expresses her thanks to her assistant and the Trustees for their support and interest in the library work.
Respectfully submitted,
EUNICE B. MARTIN, Librarian.
