ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
We wish to thank all committees and department heads and officials for their splendid co-operation during the year.
CHARLES F. BLAKELY, RALPH H. HUTCHINSON, THEODORE S. LUDDINGTON, Selectmen of Randolph
Report of Victory Committee
To the Board of Selectmen:
The Randolph Victory Committee, a war committee, was organized in September 1942, by a group of Randolph citizens. The purpose of the committee is to help the morale of the hundreds of servicemen and women of Randolph. At the Town meeting in March, 1943, the Randolph Victory Committee was voted as a regular town committee.
There can be no doubt that the purpose of this Com- mittee is being carried out successfully, when one observes the hundreds of appreciative letters received from service- men and women, stationed in all parts of the world.
We will not attempt to list all of the work done by the Committee during 1943, but will report on the highlights.
Shortly following the Second War Loan in 1943, the Committee undertook the sponsorship of selling $100,000.00 in War Bonds for the purchase of a U. S. Army Air Force Fighter Plane. A total of $123,000.00 in Bonds were sold during the campaign. The plane was purchased and named the "Spirit of Randolph, Massachusetts." A photograph of the plane, in postcard form, was mailed to each Randolph person in the service. The Committee extends their thanks and appreciation to the hundreds of students and their teachers, in the schools of Randolph for the success of the fighter plane campaign.

TOWN OF RANDOLPH, MASS.
The Randolph Victory Committee planned and ar- ranged for the erection of the stately Honor Roll that is now situated on the High School lawn. Dedicated October 17, 1943, with impressive ceremonies, the Committee, mod- estly claim that our Honor Roll, with its attractive shrub- bery, its flagstone approach and its commanding location, is a most inspiring tribute to the servicemen and women. Frequent visits to the Honor Roll by servicemen, home on furloughs and leaves, attest the morale building qualities of that project. To quote one young soldier, returned from the Pacific area, "Sir, this is thrilling, it sends those funny kind of goose-pimples through my body."
As in 1942, the Committee, during the Christmas sea- son of 1943, sent a two-pound box of chocolates to each Randolph serviceman and woman. Space will not permit us to go into detail of the popularity of this undertaking. The thanks of the entire Committee is hereby expressed to Mrs. Bertha Soule and Murray Lewis for their untiring efforts in arranging the details for mailing this gift.
As always, those at home in Randolph, have been most generous in their contributions to defray the cost of these gifts. While this war continues and so long as there are Randolph men and women stationed far from their home and loved ones, the Randolph Victory Committee will live up to its adopted slogan "Always remembering the Boys and Girls in the Service."
Sincerely,
THEODORE S. LUDDINGTON, Chairman, TIMOTHY LYONS, JR., Vice-Chairman, MARY S. O'RILEY, Secretary, MARTIN E. YOUNG, Treasurer, VIRGINIA HARKINS, Ass't Treasurer
Complete list of Victory Committee will be found on page 7.

ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
Report of Historian WORLD WAR II
To the Board of Selectmen:
On the following pages of this Annual Report, there is recorded the names of the men and women of Randolph who have dedicated themselves to fight for their country in the terrible war which engulfed the entire world on December 7, 1941.
The deeds and sacrifices made by these men and women must remain an inspiration for all time. Proper documenta- tion and chronicling of their service, their deeds and sacri- fices should exist in the permanent records of the Town of Randolph.
This is the task we have set out to accomplish.
While this report, as Historian of World War II Activi- ties, may appear statistical in nature, there are some figures and facts that will prove interesting to the citizens of the town.
On February 1st, 1944, there were 801 men and women of Randolph who have entered the armed services.
Out of each one hundred men in the service, fifty-nine wear the uniform of the Army, thirty-five are in the Navy or Coast Guard, the Marine Hymn is the theme song for five, and one battles to deliver the goods for the Maritime Service.
We have six Randolph women serving with the WAC's, eight serving with the WAVES, one woman Marine, two Canadian WACs, one WAFS, known as the Ferry Command, two Navy Nurses and two Army Nurses.
72
TOWN OF RANDOLPH, MASS.
There are eighty-nine pairs of brothers in the service, eighteen sets of three brothers, three sets of four brothers and one family with five brothers in the service. We have five fathers serving with their sons, and one father who has three sons serving along with him (with a fourth son ready to enter the service on his seventeenth birthday). We are proud to record a father and daughter serving in the Army.
More than one-half of the Randolph women who are in the service have a good family reason to don the uniform. Four of these girls have one brother serving, four have two brothers and two sisters wear the Navy blues.
The average age of all the Randolph men and women in the service on Jan. 1, 1944 was 23 years and 11 months. And on that same date the eldest person in active service was 57 years and 2 months.
Nine Sullivans (including one O'Sullivan) is the "fight- inest" name on the list, with eight Andersons next on the list.
Twenty-eight percent of those in the service were born in Randolph, while New England as a whole claims the birth- place of ninety-one percent. Six percent are foreign born while the remaining three percent were born in the United States outside of New England.
Approximately ten percent of the Town's entire popula- tion has entered the armed forces.
Our record shows that thirty-three persons have been honorably discharged from the service, during this war.
In the Town Report of 1942, published last year, we gravely recorded six casualties occuring during that year, Maurice Robert Davis, Victor Alan Lewis, Adrian George Essiembre, James Nelson, Thomas Robert Fogo and Geoffrey Marconi made the supreme sacrifice. In 1943 the shadows of war were cast heavily upon us, on five occasions. Henry D. Sanborn, died in Australia in March, James E. Markle was
73
ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTH ANNUAL REPORT
killed in action during June, Robert Almond gave his life in true Navy tradition in June, Robert H. McAuliffe, killed in service, Sept. 28th and John J. Flanagan reported missing in October.
No words of ours can express the full measure of their sublime courage.
As the information we have obtained is gathered from various sources, the completeness of the Honor Roll and the many factors attending it, cannot be warranted.
We wish to express our appreciation to the many, many families who under trying conditions, furnished the informa- tion requested. The spirit of co-operation evidences itself when more than eighty-five percent of the requests made, were returned.
It is our fervent prayer that the continuous task of com- piling this information terminates in the very near future. , That day means Victory is ours.
1
Sincerely, MURRAY LEWIS, Historian World War II Activities.
