HIGHWAY SURVEYOR'S REPORT
To the Selectmen of the Town of Andover :
GENTLEMEN : I herewith present my eighth annual report on Highways and Bridges.
We commenced work January 15, and worked when the weather was suitable. Graded Lewis street, built sidewalks on each side, taking the ashes for the foundation from the Tyer Rubber Company, covering it with screened gravel. Re- pairs were made on Summer, School, Chestnut, Bartlet and Phillips streets, also the entire length of Abbot street. We gravelled Harding street.
Early in May we repaired the old macadam on Stevens street with broken stone. When this was completed, we commenced to macadamize High street, laying 1800 feet and later finished it as far as Harding street. The heavy rains of the first three months did more damage than those of any other season during my fourteen years of service. We re- paired the Abbott Village hill, also the Main street, Walnut avenue and Phillips street hills, the latter especially had to be repaired nearly the whole length four different times.
The Frye Village sidewalk was left in my hands and we built it from Manders to Main street. From Railroad bridge to Burnham road, Haverhill street was repaired where needed.
Chandler's hill for about 400 feet has been macadamized. About 1800 feet were macadamized on Porter road, past Selectman S. H. Bailey's. Here the stones were furnished by Mr. Bailey free of charge. We have left the stone crusher here as another thousand feet should be added the coming year.
The road machine was used thirty-three days in different parts of the town repairing nearly a mile each day. A catch

basin has been put in under both tracks emptying into Rogers brook on Main street. This was paid for by the electric road. A vitrified brick crossing has been built on Main street, from Campion's to Valpey's store.
Concrete walks have been laid from Locke street to Morton street on the east side of School street, on south side of Morton street from School street to Main street, and on the west side of School street from the office of the Phillips Academy to Phillips street, under the betterment act. A crossing has been put in across Whittier street on Chestnut street. The crossing from Campion's to Memorial Hall and the concrete gutter near Campion's have been repaired. There was money appropriated to repair other old concrete walks but the concreters disappointed me and I hired others to do the work but the ground froze earlier than usual so this work was not completed.
Gutters were cleaned and stones were raked as usual. The paved gutters on Essex street have been repaired, also the one on Main street, from Morton street to School street. Two hundred feet of edgestones have been set on Essex street in front of the Catholic church, the church people pay- ing for the stones. Three new culverts have been laid with ten inch pipe, two on Haggetts Pond road and one on High Plain road. A fifteen inch Akron pipe has been laid across Central street, near Mr. Shipman's.
The Frye Village bridge has been built over new, re- planked and re-timbered.
The Ballardvale roads have been kept in good repair by the town team kept there.
