OVERSEERS OF THE POOR

The Board of Overseers of the Poor, herewith present their annual report for the year ending December 31, 1908. The work of the Poor Department is clearly defined by the Statute laws, and the expenditures are governed, to a large extent, by the de- mands, over which the Overseers have control. Under these circumstances it is our aim to immediately aid all needy cases, always endeavoring to work for the best interests of the town, without doing injustice to the worthy poor whom we are bound to aid.

On April I, our former superintendent and matron, Mr. and Mrs. George L. Burnham, severed their connection with this department. But the town has been exceedingly fortunate in securing the services of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Swanton as super- intendent and matron, who have proved themselves in every way worthy of the trust reposed in them, kind and considerate to those entrusted to their care, while looking carefully after the interests of the town.

During the year, the entire plumbing of the house has had to be replaced, entailing an expense that was not anticipated, and many changes have been made in the out-buildings, horse barn and wood-sheds moved back in line with rear of the Almshouse, old and useless buildings torn down, ground levelled and seeded down, not only vastly improving the appearance and making the rooms of the inmates pleasanter and more cheerful, but also saving the expense of keeping in repairs so many old and useless shells.

With some small changes during the coming year, and the addition of a little paint, the town will have a set of buildings neat and in good repair, second to none in the State.
