HIGHWAY SURVEYOR'S REPORT .


To the Citizens of the Town of Andover:


I herewith present my report on Highways and Bridges.


We began work April 6th on Pearson street, by graveling from John Collins' to John Stack's. Graveled 400 feet of sidewalk on Phillips street. Graveled School street from Ridge street to en- trance of Old South cemetery. Built 430 feet macadam on Sum- mer street. Put in paved gutter from entrance to Chas. White's to Stevens street, a distance of 356 feet; put in catch basin and piped around the corner and graded the street.


Built up the wall on South side of Central street from the river bridge to foot of hill, graded and put up railing a distance of 200 feet and 230 feet of railing on opposite side.


Worked out the ledge and graded the north part of Cuba street and built sidewalk from John Anderson's to James Nolan's.


Macadamized Punchard avenue.


Graveled Abbot street and sidewalk from Hemenway's, 800 feet towards cemetery.


Built piece of stone road on Poor street and some on Haverhill street, near Mander's. Graveled sidewalk near Frye Village school, took up covered drain on side of street and cleaned out culvert. Cleaned the gutter in the center, and Stevens, Frye and Abbott Villages. Put up railing on Whittier street across Rogers Brook. Put two rail fences on Tewksbury street, Ballardvale, 95 feet, and Marland Road 95 feet. Put in catch basin on Marland street and piped the water across Mr. Matthews' land. Macad- amized Andover Street from the river bridge to R. R. track.


The B. & N. street R. R. Co. paved the gutter on North Main street from the R. R. bridge to north side of Harding street also put in catch basin in each track near Locke street at their own ex- pense. Have used the road machine 23 days in different parts of the town.

Began work on Chandler Road June 24. Built 825 feet stone road, 2150 feet macadam and graveled Ledge Street nearly to Chandler Road and from River Road to George Desbrow's, also Greenwood Street from Chandler Road to North Street.


In the Cape District graveled from Henry Gray's to small Harn- den house and to Wm. Tucker's.


In the Holt District from Salem street to the Boland place and rebuilt five culverts. In Scotland District graveled Orchard street from Main street to top of hill and Hidden Road from Main street to Allen Hinton's, repaired Ballardvale, Rocky Hill and Rattlesnake Hill roads. Relaid culvert on Rocky Hill Road.


Built sidewalk on Main street, in front of Arco Biulding at cost of $580 00 besides the labor put in paved gutter from Press build- ing to corner at Whiting's store and re-surfaced the macadam. Put in three catch basins, straightened up the curbstone and relaid brick walk in front of Campion's store.


Cut down Chestnut street from Joseph Cole's driveway to Main street ; put in concrete walk on both sides and macadamized the street ; put in curbstone and paved gutter on Essex street, a dis- tance of 90 feet.


The Boston & Maine put in catch basin on Essex street, and two on Pearson street.


Built concrete crossing on Whittier street, near Chestnut street and on Wheeler street near Bartlet street. Put crossing on Chest- nut next to Main street; put in concrete apron on Salem street, at entrance to Dining Hall; built 1322 feet macadam on Porter Road ; put catch basin on Park street and laid 12 inch pipe to the culvert on Bartlet street, a distance of 300 feet ; put in 12 inch pipe on Bartlet street from Chestnut street to Rogers Brook.


Cleaned out culvert running from North side Punchard avenue across Bartlet street driveway to Punchard school ; put in crossing on Ridge street next to school and repaired concrete walks on School and Central streets.


The Boston & Maine put in 120 feet paved gutter on Harding street, being the approach to their road, also 100 feet for the town for the use of one of the teams and many other necessary repairs in other parts of the town.

The Ballardvale roads have been kept in good repair by the town team kept there.
