MEMORIAL HALL LIBRARY
THIRTY-FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
The past year has been one of changes in the adminis- tration of the library. The generous bequest of Mrs. Helen G. (Smith) Coburn, mentioned in the last annual report, has been received, and has made possible the beginning of a more modern equipment, the urgent need of which has long been felt. Mr. Ballard Holt, the only librarian of Memorial Hall since it was opened, May 1, 1873, has resigned his office, after a most faithful service of a full generation. He was succeeded, Sept. 1, 1906, by Miss Edna A. Brown of Providence, R. I., a lady of thorough education in library schools, and of wide experience in organizing and conduct- ing public libraries.
Following her suggestions, and at the cost of several hun- dred dollars, various improvements have been already made, notably, the inauguration of the modern loan system with a new delivery counter ; the taking away of the glass partitions, so as to make the shelves of the fiction department accessible to readers ; the removal of covers from books (this only in part, as yet), giving them a much more attractive appear- ance; the placing of new books in a separate case in the reading room, for the ready inspection of patrons ; and the erection of special shelves for the children, where they can themselves select, under the advice of the librarian, their own books and examine them at an adjacent table-until low, round tables, with small chairs, can be procured for them. The arrangement of newspapers and magazines on racks economizes the space in the reading room, and pro- motes the convenience of the readers.
The afternoon hours have been increased, the library now
118
being open continuously from three to nine o'clock, p. m. Miss Twichell, who has been from the beginning the cus- todian of the Cornell Art Gallery, has been engaged as li- brarian's assistant and Miss Abbie S. Davis appointed to take her place in the care of the Art Collection. The ser- vices of Mr. Holt are still retained as the caretaker of the library.
That these improvements are thoroughly appreciated is shown by the number frequenting the library-children as well as adults-and the circulation of books, both of which are steadily increasing. It is proposed to introduce other methods and equipments, sure to contribute still further to the usefulness of the library, whenever its resources in room and funds will permit.
In this connection grateful acknowledgement is made of timely gifts of twenty-five dollars from Professor John Phelps Taylor, and thirty dollars from the Andover Village Improvement Society, for the purchase of children's books, and of twelve dollars from the same society for periodicals pertaining to art and nature studies. A pair of costly marble vases, brought from Italy by the late Mrs. Coburn, has been given to the Memorial Hall by Mrs. Joseph W. Smith and a bust of Robert Burns been deposited by the Burns Club.
In addition to the continued income from the "Lieut. Governor Phillips Fund," to be spent for religious books- which as seen in the accompanying accession list has added many volumes of practical value in the Sunday school and missionary studies of the churches of the town, as well as other standard works-the library has just received from the Trustees of Phillips Academy the sum of practically two thousand dollars. This is the share of the accrued income of another donation made by the founder of Phillips Academy in 1802 for the benefit of the female teachers of the town, which now by a decree of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts (on application of the
119
Academy) has come to the trustees of this library. The interest of this amount, increased by a similar share of the current annual income of the same donation, is to be " specially devoted to the purchase of such reference books and of such current educational periodicals and publi- cations as may tend to render the female teachers in the public schools of Andover better qualified for the discharge of their delicate and important trust."
Thus do the benefactors of a century ago unite with those of a generation ago and of the present time in promoting the educational and moral welfare of the men, women and chil- dren of Andover-and may others be moved to join their company !

Report of the Custodian of the Cornell Art Gallery
To the Trustees of the Memorial Hall Library :
GENTLEMEN : - The Cornell Art Gallery has been visited during the year by 3277 persons ; of this number 955 were adults and 2322 were children, an average daily attendance of 32.
. Catalogues in book form have been dispensed with, their place being taken by lists of the pictures mounted on stiff
121
cardboard, thereby making a most convenient and durable form of catalogue.
Many who have come for the first time have been sur- prised and delighted at the fine collection, and have ex- pressed much regret over their tardy appreciation. It is most earnestly hoped that many more will avail themselves of the opportunity to study so many masterpieces.
Respectfully submitted,
ABBIE S. DAVIS.
