ARTICLE 6. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to authorize its Board of Selectmen to accept conveyances or mort- gages of any real or personal property belonging to persons receiving relief from the Town, and to dispose of said property in the manner they may judge for the Town's best interest, and to authorize them to discharge any encumbrances on said property if they consider it for the best in- terest of the Town so to do, and to see what sum of money the Town will vote to raise and appropriate for the discharging of such encum- brances.

or any portion of said ways, and will authorize the Board of Selectmen to acquire by gift or purchase or take by right of eminent domain in fee or otherwise for all purposes of a public street and highway in and over each of said streets as laid out and accepted, and see what sum of money the Town will vote to raise and appropriate for the working of each of the above-named streets, including the acquisition of the fee above referred to and for the building of any bridges, drains and conduits or securing easements which may be necessary in connection therewith, and to see whether the Town will authorize the Board of Selectmen to accept deeds of any reservation strips existing in connection with any of said streets, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 8. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see what sum of money the Town will vote to raise and appropriate for the construction of :

accepted by the Town under Article 7 of the 1956 Annual Town Meeting, but not worked, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 9. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see what sum of money the Town will vote to raise and appropriate to reconstruct, resur- face, widen, straighten, relocate or work, Commercial and Pleasant Streets, or any portion of said way and for the building of any bridges, drains and conduits, or securing easements which may be necessray in connec- tion therewith, and to see whether the Town will authorize the Board of Selectmen to accept deeds or any reservation strips existing in con- nection with said street, provided the State, or County, or both will appro- priate a sum of money to help defray the expenses of such work; and transfer from surplus funds that the Town may have, the county and state share of said cost, the amount of this transfer or reimbursement to be credited to the account from which it came; and will authorize the Board of Selectmen to acquire by gift, purchase or take by right of emi- nent domain in fee or otherwise for all purposes of a public street and highway in and over said street and such property as may be necessary or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 10. (At Request of George E. Lane and others). To see if the Town will raise and appropriate or borrow the sum of $250,000.00 for continuance of the Major Highway Program for reconstruction of main streets and roads including Commercial Church, Green, Evans, Pleasant Streets provided that Chapter 90 funds, if any, may be used for this purpose, or take any other action in relation thereto.

ARTICLE 11. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will take by right of eminent domain in fee or otherwise the lands and buildings at 1349 to 1379 Pleasant Street as shown on plan entitled "Plan of land in Weymouth, Mass. Proposed Land Taking" plan 204-B dated October 1956 made by Arthur J. Bilodeau, Town Engineer, for the pur- pose of widening Pleasant Street, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 12. (At Request of George E. Lane and others). To see what sum of money the Town will raise and appropriate for relocation, reconstruction and rebuilding of Pleasant Street from 1293 Pleasant to Water Street and for damages involved in the work, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 13. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise the sum of three hundred (300) dollars for the purpose of purchasing a parcel of land at Ledge Hill Road from the Weymouth Lodge No. 1299 Loyal Order of Moose, said parcel of land being shown on plan entitled "Weymouth, Mass. Land Taking Ledge Hill Road at Commercial Street" dated May 1956 Plan No. 11-B-1 made by Arthur J. Bilodeau, Town Engineer," for the purpose of widening said Lodge Hill Road, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 14. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise the sum of one hundred (100) dollars for the purpose of purchasing a parcel of land at the intersection of Essex and Broad Streets from George W. Killory, said parcel of land being shown on Plan entitled "Plan of Land in Weymouth, Mass." dated November 1956, Plan No. 190-B-1 made by Arthur J. Bilo- deau, Town Engineer, for the purpose of widening said streets, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 15. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to abandon a small triangular parcel of land shown as Lot B on a plan entitled "Plan of Subdivision of land in Weymouth, Mass.," dated October 14, 1956, by Arthur J. Bilodeau, Registered Land Surveyor, said land not needed by the town in the relocation of Belmont Street, and to see if the Town will vote to accept relocated Belmont Street as shown on said plan as a public way, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 16. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate the sum of $4,250.00 to remove ledge and widen Westminster Road at approximately No. 72. Work to be done by private contract under the direction of the Board of Selectmen and Town Engineer, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 17. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate a sum of money for the reconstruction of Evans and Middle Streets under the provisions of Chapter 718 of the Acts of 1956, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 18. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation, or otherwise the sum of $10,- 500.00 for the construction of a retaining wall on the southerly side of Oak Street, wall beginning at the intersection of Oak Street and Pine Street, and ending at 27 Oak Street, a distance of approximately 350 feet, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 19. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will

accept the report of the Selectmen laying out as a Town Way Manomet Road from Wessagusset Road to Grandview Road and to take by right of eminent domain in fee or otherwise the Barn Structure and necessary land of Charles and Edna Chase, of 189 Sea Street, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 20. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to instruct the Superintendent of the Sewer Department when black topping the area after completing installation of a sewer main down the center of said street to run the black top from curbing to curbing, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 21. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see what sum of money the Town will appropriate to black top present existing sidewalk between Maple Street and Chard Street on Middle Street across from High School, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 22. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate the sum of $5,000.00 for black topping of a sidewalk on the southerly side of Columbian Street (Route 128) from the Braintree Town Line to the intersection of Park Avenue and Columbian Street, provided work to be completed only if the State Department of Public Works prepares the area for black top; work too be done by a contractor, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 23. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate a sum of money by taxation or otherwise for sidewalks, curbing and resurfacing of Neck Street, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 24. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see what sum of money the Town will vote to raise and appropriate for the construction of a double barralled fifteen foot by six foot reinforced concrete box culvert more or less two hundred fifty feet long as recommended by Met- calf and Eddy Report. Culvert to be constructed at the intersection of Pine Street and Pleasant Street over Old Swamp River or take any other action in relation thereto. Work to be done by Private Contractor under the direction of the Board of Selectmen and the Town Engineer.


ARTICLE 25. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see what sum of money the Town will vote to raise or appropriate, by taxation or other- wise, for the installation of 1200 feet of pipe and several catch basins on Pleasant Street, from Swamp River to about 630 Pleasant Street, for drainage improvement, or take any other action in relation thereto. Said work to be done by the Highway Department.


ARTICLE 26. (On Petition and by Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise the sum of $7,765.00 for drainage improvements of parts of Ranger Circle, Saning Road, Phillips Street, Moreland Road, Bengal Road, Thomas Road and Front Street, these areas have previously been referred to the Drain- age Committee and have in turn been recommended as necessary work to be done by the Highway Department, or take any other action in re- lation thereto.


ARTICLE 27. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vcte to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise the sum of $10,500.00 to install a Drainage System in Kensington Road and King Avenue; work to be done by Private Contract under the direction of the Selectmen and the Town Engineer. Reference being made to plan entitled "Plan

of Land in Weymouth, Mass. Kensington Road Drainage" Plan No. 65-B dated December 1956 made by Arthur J. Bilodeau, Town Engineer, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 28. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise the sum of $1,800.00 for the drainage of Vanness Road (approximately 800 to 1,000 feet of pipe), or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 29. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate the sum of $2,500.00 for the purpose of in- stalling catch basins and drainage pipe to adequately drain the following streets: Hawthorne, Cedar, Raymond, Myrtle and Grove Streets; drains to be connected to the Water Street drainage system. Said work to be done by the Highway Department, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 30. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise a sum of money to rectify embankment conditions and drainage on Great Hill Drive, or take any other action in relation thereto. Work to be done by Private Contractor under direction of the Selectmen and the Town Engineer.


ARTICLE 31. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see what sum of money the Town will raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise to correct drainage problem at the East Weymouth Parking Area, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 32. (At Request of Drainage Committee). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise, the sum of $155,500.00 for the installation of a drainage system for the Weymouth- Braintree Smelt Brook area as recommended in report by Metclaf and Eddy, Engineers, in report to Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Depart- ment of Public Works, dated April 17, 1956; that all work to be done under the direction of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Public Works; aand that the Board of Selectmen be authorized to secure or accept any easements necessary for the above purpose; and the Town's share of the damages shall be payable from above appropriation provided the money to be made available only if the Town of Braintree make available a like amount and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, De- partment of Public Works make available 50% of the entire cost, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 33. (At Request of Drainage Committee). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise, a sum of $7,500.00 for the installation of 36" R.C. drainage line under the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad tracks at the northerly end of the Braintree-Weymouth Parking area as shown on proposed plan and profile showing proposed drain at New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad in Weymouth, dated May 18, 1956; all work to be done by pri- vate contract, under the direction of the Boards of Selectmen and Town Engineers of Weymouth and Braintree; and that the Board of Selectmen be authorized to secure or accept any easements for the above purpose; the money to be made available only if the Town of Braintree make avail- able a like amount or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 34. (At Request of Drainage Committee). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise a sum of money to take care of drainage from the westerly boundry of the

Shaw School site to Mill River, shown on a plan by Arthur J. Bilodeau, Town Engineer, and the cleaning of Mill River 100 feet up-stream of the proposed drainage outlet to the culvert at West Street; all work to be done by private contract, under the direction of the Board of Selectmen and the Town Engineer, and that the Board of Selectmen be authorized to secure or accept any easements necessary for the above purpose, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 35. (At Request of Drainage Committee). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise a sum of money to take care of the drainage from Hinston Road, Sunrise Drive and Phillips Creek district to the Weymouth Back River. as shown on preliminary plan by Metcalf and Eddy, Engineers. All work to be done by private contract, under the direction of the Board of Selectmen and the Town Engineer, and that the Board of Selectmen be authorized to secure or accept any easements necessary for the above purpose. or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 36. (At Request of Drainage Committee). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise a sum of money to take care of the drainage from the junction of Lincoln and Neck Streets, junction of Seabury and Green Streets in a northerly di- rection in Neck Street to Great Hill Drive, then easterly to Weymouth Back River, as recommended by Metcalf and Eddy; all work to be done. by Private Contract, under the direction of the Selectmen and the Town Engineer, and the Board of Selctmen be authorized to secure or accept any easements necessary for the above purpose, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 37. (At Request of Drainage Committee). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise a sum of money to take care of drainage from the junction of Willow Avenue and Sea Street to Weymouth Fore River; all work to be done by Private Contract, under the direction of the Selectmen and the Town Engineer, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 38. (By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate a sum of money for construction of side- walks and curbing in the sidewalk building program; said money to be under the jurisdiction of the Board of Selectmen, or take any other action in relation thereto.


SEWER


ARTICLE 39. (At Request of Sewer Commissioners). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate a sum of money for the con- struction of common sewer and determine whether the money shall be provided for by taxation, by appropriation from available funds including sewer assessment funds, and by borrowing under authority of Chapter 44 of the General Laws, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 40. (At the Request of Sewer Commissioners). To see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate a sum of money for the construc- tion of particular sewers and determine whether the money shall be provided for by taxation, by appropriation from available funds including sewer assessment funds, and by borrowing under authority of Chapter 44 of the General Laws, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 41. (On Petition of James J. Doherty and others). To

see if the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or other- wise a sum of money to tie in Brook Terrace to the main sewer line on Pierce Road a distance of approximately 400 feet. or take any other action in relation thereto.


EDUCATION


ARTICLE 42. (At Request of Building Committee). To see what sum of money the Town will vote to raise by taxation, or otherwise, and appropriate, for the purpose of constructing and originally equipping and furnishing an elementary school on the site off Front Street purchased from the Stetson Shoe Companay, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 43. (At Requesst of Building Committee). To see what sum of money the Town will vote to raise by taxation, or otherwise, and appropriate, for the purpose of acquiring by gift, purchase, or eminent domain in fee part of Lot 15, Block 381 containing about 237,510 square feet, part of Lot 1, Block 434 containing about 487 square feet; Lot 4 con- taining 5,900 square feet, part of Lot 5 containing about 64,350 square feet, part of Lot 6 containing about 101,000 square feet, part of Lot 11 containing about 19,500 square feet, all in Block 433, and all as shown on Sheets 33 and 34 of the Atlas of the Town of Weymouth dated January 1, 1956, as a site for an elementary school and as access ways to the site the widening of Hanover Street by taking up to 10 feet of the lots abutting this street as follows: on the northeast side lots 6, 7, 8 and 9, Block 381, one southwest side Lot 1, Block 430; and a 40 foot right of way from Lane Avenue "extended" for a distance of approximately 150 feet to be taken from Lot 1, Block 434 all as shown on Sheets 33 and 34 of the Atlas of the Town of Weymouth dated January 1, 1956, or take any other action in relation thereto. (This site would be just south of the new Klassen and Ericson Shopping Center on Washington Street with the Hanover Street entrance off Middle Street). (9.84 acres).


ARTICLE 44. (At Request of the School Committee). To see what sum of money the Town will vote to raise and appropriate by taxation or otherwise for the purpose of preparing complete drawings and de- tailed specifications for the construction of a new elementary school on the site described in Article 43 above as a replacement for the present Center Portable School, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 45. (At Request of School Committee). To see what ac- tion the Town will take to exempt public school teachers, who are re- quired to be members of the State Teachers' Retirement System (but not other school employees) from the provision for a complete examina- tion prior to entrance into the Town's service as required under the new section 628 of the Town by-laws, which was adopted under Article 60 at the Annual Town Meeting in 1956, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 46. (At Request of Amy Hill Duncan and others). To see if the Town will vote to instruct the Moderator to appoint a committee consisting of two members of the School Committee, three members of former School Building Committees, the Superintendent of Schools, and nine residents and taxpayers for the purpose of making a complete in- vestigation and study relative to administration, operation maintenance, management and costs of schools and school construction in the Town, said committee to report its findings and recommendations to the School Committee, Appropriation Committee and Annual Town Meeting no

later than March 1958, and that the sum of $1,500.00 be raised and ap- propriated by taxation or otherwise for the use of the committee in its work, or take any other action in relation thereto.


WATER


ARTICLE 47. (At Request of the Board of Water Commissioners). To see what sum of money the Town will appropriate for water works purposes to take by purchase, gift or take by eminent domain in fee a lot of land containing 1200 square feet located opposite No. 50 Hollis Street and shown on 1956 Town Atlas as Lot 18, Block 548 on Sheet 49 and owned by Edward W. Fasci and Mildred L. Fasci, joint tenants, or take any other action in relation thereto.


ARTICLE 48. (On Petition of Pond Plain Improvement Association). To see what sum of money the Town will vote t raisoe and appropriate to install a 12-inch reinforcing water main on Pond Street from No. 240 Pond Street to Thicket Street and to install a 10-inch reinforcing water main on Thicket Street from Pond Street to No. 125 Thicket Street, to be installed under the direction of the Water Commissioners, or take any other action in relation thereto.


LIBRARY


ARTICLE 49. (At Request of Trustees of Tufts Library). That the Town vote to amend the Regulations for Tufts Library as presently amended so that said Regulations shall be as follows:


I. The Library shall be called the Tufts Library and shall be managed and controlled by a Board of Trustees consisting of nine Elective Trustees who shall be legal residents of the Town of Weymouth.


II. The term of office of said Elected Trustees shall be three years, and they shall be elected one-third each year at the Annual Town Election.


III. When any vacancy shall occur in said Board, in consequence of the refusal or neglect of any elected Trustee to accept office, or the death, resignation, or change of residence of any such Trustee to a place out- side the Town of Weymouth, such vacancy shall be filled at the next annual Town election-"or take any other action in relation thereto."


ZONING


ARTICLE 50. (On Petition and By Direction of Selectmen). To see if the Town will vote to amend its Zoning By-Laws and Zoning Map, Ar- ticle X of the Town By-Laws, by making the following changes: Change of Districts. From Residential to Business, Lots 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 now or formerly the property of Charles C. Fortier and Helen E. Fortier, tenants by the entirety, and Lot 14 now or formerly the property of Dor- othea F. Fucci, Block 533, Sheet 46, as shown in the Town Atlas revised to January 1, 1956, or take any other action in relation thereto.


BY-LAWS


ARTICLE 51. (At Request of By-Law Committee). To see what sum of money the Town will vote to raise and appropriate for printing the By-Laws of the Town and Rules and Regulations of Town Depart- ments or take any other action in relation thereto.
