REPORT OF COMMITTEE ON MEMORIAL TABLETS

Under Article 37 of the 1954 Annual Town Meeting the appointment of a committee was authorized and this committee was appointed by the Moderator to prepare preliminary plans for a memorial table or tablets providing for the names of World War II and Korean War Veterans and report to a future town meeting.

After a number of meetings and a thorough survey of the site the committee files herewith their preliminary plans for the erection of mem- orial tablets providing for the names of World War II and Korean War Veterans to be attached to the west side of the existing permanent brick memorial wall located on the High School grounds.

The committee estimates that the two bronze tablets as designed by the Weymouth Vocational School will accommodate approximately four thousand names using 5/16" lettering and also memorializing eighty-eight Gold Star Veterans with 5/8" lettering on the center section of each tablet. It is our recommendation that the present bronze tablets on the east side of the permanent brick memorial wall be refinished so that they will match the new tablets and that the stone tablet at the top center of the front wall be resurfaced.

The committee has checked the cost factors involved and on the basis of a quoted figure of $2.90 per name estimates that the sum of $11,200.00 for this purpose and the sum of $1,000.00 would be required for refinishing the present bronze and stone tablet on the east side of the memorial wall.

The problem of procuring a complete and accurate list of World War II Veterans and particularly a list of the Veterans of the Korean conflict has caused the members of this committee great concern and it hereby recommends that a sum of $2,000.00 be allocated for clerical assistance and other incidental expenses in preparing a list of the Veterans names to be included on the tablets.

An Article to appropriate funds for these purposes will appear in the warrant of the 1958 annual town meeting.

We would indeed be remiss unless we expressed our appreciation and thanks for the assistance and help rendered the committee by the Voca- tional School in general and its Director, Ray G. Parker, and Instructor, George Klay in particular in planning and drawing the proposed tablets and to Miss Olive E. Hackett of the Weymouth High School for her kind- ness in listing the names of the World War II Veterans.

Respectfully submitted, HAROLD B. NASH, Chairman DOROTHY E. PAGE, Secretary FRANCIS H. MAGUIRE DONALD V. SLAYTER
