The Treasurer further reports that, early in his term of ser- vice and again at a later day, he called on Millins Taft and of- fered to pay him one hundred dollars, as principal, on the note he holds against the town. Mr, Taft is willing the note shall remain as it is, for the present, but declines to receive any por- tion of the principal. In consequence of this decision the un- dersigned suggested to the Selectmen the insertion of an article in the warrant, for the present meeting, bringing the subject be- fore the town for their consideration.
The interest has been paid, in full, on all the notes due to the town, except the one due from George and Sylvia Wood. There was due on this note July 5th, 1860, as interest, the sum of $115.21. Since then, the sum of $50.00 has been paid, thus reducing the amount due, at the time before mentioned, to $65.21; and which sum, it is expected, will be paid by or be- fore the 1st day of June of the present year.
6
By the books of the Selectmen it appears there are SEVEN OUTSTANEING ORDERS against the town, amounting to $346.00. Upon four of these the undersigned has paid ONE YEAR'S interest; but, being deficient in funds, at the time payment of interest was demanded, he was unable to redeem them. Since then, when enquired for, for the purpose of redemption, he was told the orders had changed hands; but who now holds them he was not told, nor have the same been since presented for payment. One other order, when enquired for (of the person SUPPOSED to hold the same) was said to be in the possession of a person then in Connecticut. By this it will be seen that the town is paying interest on $346.00, when there is $227,91 lying idle in the treasury.
It may be mentioned, in this place, as matter of congratula- tion, that all the taxes remaining uncollected, at the date of this report, were but $720.12 against $2069.72 at the beginning of the present municipal year.
All which is respectfully submitted.
JNO. GEO. METCALF, TREASURER.
