The Purchasing Committee has expended $75.53 the past year in the purchase of new books, and hope their selection will be satisfac- tory to a majority of those who read them.

It will be seen by the report of the librarian, that the proportion of novels and stories to the more solid and instructive reading taken out, is greater during the past year than during the time the Library had previously been open. This is not gratifying, and the Trustees wish to call the attention of parents and those having charge of young persons patronizing the Library, to their obvious duty in this matter. Great advantages involve great responsibilities for their right use. While your Board would not indiscriminately condemn

23

the reading of all works of fiction, it is an undoubted fact that an unlimited indulgence in such reading not only tends to make more substantial and useful matter less attractive, but actually diminishes the capacity to comprehend and retain such, even when read with an earnest desire so to do.

Those having charge of young persons, can do much to direct their reading so that they may gain the greatest good from the use of the Library books, and we trust they will give this important inatter their careful consideration.

The Trustees regret that they were unable to complete the ar- rangements they deemed necessary in regard to the fence around the grounds of the Record Repository, as contemplated by the gen- erous gift of Mrs. S. E. Huston, until the party who had contracted to build the same had entered upon other and more profitable con- tracts, which he did not complete until too late in the season to erect the fence in a satisfactory manner. The material for the fence is now nearly prepared, and we are assured that it shall be erected as soon as the ground opens The committee having the matter in charge, promise their best efforts to that end.

An appropriation of one hundred and fifty dollars for the Library is now recommended. Besides the $75 required to be expended in books, there will be books to be rebound, and some 20 volumes of periodicals, contributed by the Mendon Book Club, to be bound. Attention is called to the fact that these latter, costing only the ex- pense of binding, are taken out more, in proportion to their num- ber, than any other class of reading in the Library, except novels and stories, and that they furnish a high grade of light reading. The librarian's salary, also, will be to be paid, and there will be some small incidental expenses.

We record our gratitude to the donors for the gifts received dur- ing the year, and would bespeak for the Library the continued and liberal support of our fellow-citizens.
