The Selectmen would further report, that late last autumn, their attention was called to the state of the Bridges over Mill River and Muddy Brook, near the Box Shop of Samuel G. Wilcox, and after an examination of the same, they decided that the safety of the travel, and the interests of the Town would be promoted by replacing with new ones, some of the old stringers of both Bridges, and covering both anew with plank. „Accordingly, printed notices were issued for proposals to furnish the lumber, and to do the necessary labor ; but ow-
16
ing to the lateness of the season and scarcity of laborers, no response was received to our invitation for proposals. Be- lieving that a contract to furnish the stringers and plank could be made on cheaper terms the present winter, than later in the season, we have contracted with Alanson Taft, to furnish the stringers, and the required amount of square edged chest- nut plank, two inches thick, all of which is to be delivered where wanted, by the first of May ensuing, thus leaving to our successors, only the duty of procuring some one to do the la- bor of getting in the new stringers, and putting on the new plank.
