The Treasurer further reports that, pursuant to instructions from the Town, he has paid the note held by Millens Taft against the Town, originally given for the Asylum for the Poor and the farm therewith belonging, amounting to the sum (principal $2,750, and interest, one year, $165 00) of $2,915 00. To pay this sum, the amount was hired, at 6 per cent., as follows, viz.,-of the Worcester County Institu- tion for Savings, $2,200 ; of Christopher and Marcena Dan- iels, with the privilege of paying $100 00 of the principal
7
annually, $600 00 ; of Austin Wood, $100 00, and of Anna W. Hastings, $15 00. The last two notes have since been paid, leaving the present indebtedness, on the account of the Asylum, $2,800 00.
The note of Sarah J. Taft has also been paid, amounting to the sum (principal $642 30, and interest $42 17) of $684 47. The interest was paid from the Contingent Fund, and the principal by loans, at six per cent, from the following persons : From Anna W. Hastings, $250 00, of which $50 00 of the principal has since been paid; from Anna W. Hastings, guardian of Wm. S. Hastings, $236 00 ; and from Micajah C. Gaskell, $156 30.
Pursuant to a vote of the Town authorizing the Treasurer to hire a sum not exceeding five thousand dollars, for the pur- pose of aiding the families of volunteers, from this Town, who are engaged in the overthrow of the present rebellion, the sum of $400 00 has been borrowed. Of this sum, the larger por- tion will in due time be reimbursed by the State.
It will be seen that a portion of the notes given for the Town's portion of the surplus revenue are not secured by mortgage. The amount of such notes is $635 35, and it is recommended that the same be collected and invested where ample and undoubted security can be given, by mortgage upon real estate.
The following is a schedule of Notes outstanding against the Town, the interest upon which has been paid, in full, to the period of their several dates.

As some inconvenience is sometimes experienced, by the supposed tardiness of the Selectmen in apportioning the School money among the several Districts, the Selectmen, before closing their Report, have thought it advisable to call the attention of Prudential Committees, and also of the Treasurer to the following votes of the Town, passed Sept. 17th, 1842, and remain in force at the present time.
" Voted, That the Prudential Committees of the several

School Districts in Town, make return, of the number of scholars in their respective Districts, between the ages of 3 and 21 years, to the Selectmen, May the first, and that the Selectment proceed to divide the School money among the several Districts, according to the By-Laws of the Town for the time being, in the month of July."
" Voted, That the Treasurer of the Town transmit to the Selectmen of the Town, on or before the 20th day of July in each year, the amount of money to be expended for schooling the current year."
Having thus called the attention of the proper officers to their duties, as defined by the above votes, it is to be hoped that our successors, when the time prescribed for the division of the school money arrives, may not be under the necessity of doing themselves, what is required of Prudential Com- mittees and the Treasurer.
