1940. Record of Precinct 2, Town of Boxford, National and State election, Tuesday, November 5, 1940.


In accordance with the requirements of the warrant issued by the Selectment dated Oct. (25), 1940 the inhabitants of Precinct 2 Town of Boxford, qualified to vote in election met in Lincoln Hall on Tuesday November 5, 1940.


The warrant was read by Harry L. Cole Departy Bleck The ballot box after being examined by the precinct officers and the public was found to be empty, It was then locked and the key taken and held by George F. W. Hopping the constable in attendance the register indi- cating 000,


At seven o'clock A.M. the presiding officer called upon those persons qualified to vote in elections to bring in Their ballots for the expressed in the warrant.


At 2.02 o'clock P.M. The polls were closed, the register indicating 171.


The officers in charge of the check lists then proceede to count the names checked on said lists and found the whole number to be 171.


The ballot box was then opened and the ballots taken therefrom and audibly counted one by one in the presence of the precinct officers and the public, and the whole number was found to be

That the Town make a vigorous protest to the proper authorities, against the proposal of the Boston and Maine Rail Road, to discontinue services on The Newburyport Branch from Danvers to Newburyport.(Thevotewas unanimon)

as amended, that the Town appoint a Committee to handle the protest and cooperate with the other Towns affected by the proposed discontinuance, anden power This Committee to take such steps as it deems necessary to protect the interests of the Town: And that they be instructed to report at an adjourned meeting within a few weeks.

At an adjournment of the Special Town Meeting, of December 3, 1940. held in the Town Hall, Boxford, on Monday evening, Des 23.1940. the following record was madeviz: The meeting was called to order by the Moderator, William &. Greenler at 80 clack P.M.


It was moved that Article two be taken up, and that we hear a report from the Committee chosen at the last meeting.


Prof. Franklin C. Roberts, Chairman of the Committee, gave an extended report on the situation; stating that the different towns and Newburyport, on the line of Rail Road affected by the discontinuance of the Rail Road between Danvers and Newburyport were strongly opposed to the same being discontin- Med. and expected they would appropriate more to fight it. He also stated that the Committee had been in conference with the officials of The Boston and Marine Rail Road, and That although they were received very pleasantly, they did not get any satisfaction from them. Mr. Harlan T. Kelsey In added to what Prof. Roberts had said. that the report of the Committee, beaccepted as a report of progress Moved to Take up Article 3.


that the unexpended balance of $101.50 in the Voca- tional E ducation Account, $50.00 in the Soldier's Relief Account, $25.00 in the Military Aid Account, $100.00 in the Board of Health Account, and enough from the Public Welfare Account to make up a total of $ 500,00 be reappropriated to combat the Boston and Maine Rail Road, to prevent them from discon- tinning the Road, from Danvers to Newburyport, and that the above sum be available to the Com -
