D-F Dover-Foxcroft

All places mentioned are in Maine unless otherwise stated.

"Guilford Biographies" was presented to the public in 1942, "Milo Biographies" in 1945 and now "Dover-Foxcroft Biogra- phies" in 1947. Any price that the public would pay for a book of this nature would not adequately reimburse a man for his time and cash investment. To work up such a book is a thankless task, but when it is completed is much appreciated, and therein is the major reward. It was because the first two books were so much appreciated that this third one was undertaken. No one regrets more than the writer that for several reasons this book does not include quite as large a percent of the population of the town covered as the previous two, but there is considerable satisfaction in the fact that where the writer was best known he had the better response.

I can forgive myself for any of the errors except names of people, places and dates. I only hope they are exactly as given to me and that they were given to me correctly.

Please do not pack this book away but keep it handy and refer to it often. If any reader, especially those far away, should find old acquaintances listed herein and will drop them a line it will be much appreciated. I would like to attest to the uniform courtesy and patience of the great majority of the Dover-Fox- croft people in giving me of their time and interest in this work. There is a whole lot of Christian courtesy left in the world yet!

Frank W. Keniston

DOVER-FOXCROFT

A comprehensive history of Dover and Foxcroft as separate towns and of Dover-Foxcroft since the union in 1922, would make interesting reading. The writer has not the time or ability to do the subject justice, therefore will not spoil it for someone better qualified. Suffice it to say that Dover-Foxcroft has a popu- lation of approximately four thousand and is the business and trading center for a large surrounding area. It is the shire town of Piscataquis County, the second largest county in Maine. This county has its full share of natural attractions that tend to make it a popular stopping place for visitors who visit this area from all over the United States. Within its borders is Moosehead Lake, the largest body of fresh water in New England; also Mount Katahdin, one of the highest elevations on the Atlantic seaboard, and the first peak in the Union to see the morning sun. Dover-Foxcroft has several industries, fertile farms, and well stocked stores. Also a fine hotel, two banks, several churches, a modern public library, a well equipped hospital, a new theatre, and last but not least, splendid schools, including old Foxcroft Academy, which has a long and creditable history. The town is served by the Bangor & Aroostook and Maine Cen- tral railroads; also has highway bus service in every direction. The citizens have been unusually successful in keeping the town physically and morally clean.

"My town is the place where my home is founded- My town has the right to my civic loyalty, It supports me and I should support it, My town wants my citizenship, not my partisanship; My friendliness, not my dissension- It has some things better than others; The best things I should seek to make better, The worst things I should help to suppress."
