Classical Institute about one hundred years ago, and his descendents having made it their responsibility and interest ever since, to the extent that when new and modern build- ings were erected over fifty years ago, John H. Higgins, Mrs. McCulley Higgins and Attorney Stewart were the larger contributors. In more recent years Franklin A. Hig- gins has been one of the larger financial backers of the In- stitute with considerable weight in shaping its policies. The Higgins family has long been known as manufacturers of high grade carpets, as well as dealers in real estate, and has a very amazing record of successful operations. Beginning with a cash capital of less than one hundred dollars, the story of the rapid increase of the Higgins fortune reads like a fairy story. Their carpet business today operates four fac- tories located in different cities and employs seven thou- sand persons. Olney L. Higgins has resided in or near Dover-Foxcroft for forty years, discharging heavy responsi- bilities by reason of early contacts, and also enjoying vari- ous hobbies. Being a great lover of horses and dogs, his stable usually includes several highly bred horses which at present are "Adam Hall" with a record of 2.061/2, "Dark Laughter," "Miss Lucille" and "Prince Altair," and his ken- nel includes seven dogs; four of them having taken prizes at the New York shows. He has two English Manchester spaniels weighing but four and one half pounds each; "Prince Charming," a Straffordshire English terrier, and four English fox terriers. Mr. Higgins has a keen interest in assisting worthy girls and boys in getting an education. His art collections, of which he/is justly proud, is another of his greatest interests, and in richness, beauty, variety, and real value is probably not excelled, if equalled, by any similar private collection east of New York City. Mr. Hig- gins is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
