Vol. Inf., May 2, 1862, continuing until Sept., 1863; was sur- geon same regiment, Sept., 1863, to Sept. 1865 (on duty in the field); medical di- rector of a division in the army, 1864. on staff of Gen. C. C. Andrews. Resumed practice at Albert Lea in 1865; formed partnership with Dr. L. A. Blackmer, 1869, at same time founding retail drug store; partnership was dissolved, 1873; appointed collector internal revenue, 1881, and continued two years, retiring from drug trade during that time. Mem- ber Minnesota House of Representatives, 1870-71; State Senator, 1881; assistant surgeon general on staffs of Governors Merriam and Nelson, 1881-95, with rank of lieutenant colonel. Has been local surgeon Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Ry. Co., since 1875; examiner life in- surance companies; practice now re- stricted to consultation work. One of the founders of the city and its first su- pervisor; was president First National Bank, Albert Lea, 1892; has owned and conducted stock farm near Albert Lea, since 1875, and for many years has been a successful breeder of Shorthorns. Now member State Forestry Board, president Freeborn County Medical Society, and in 1880 was president Minnesota State Medical Association. Republican (dele- gate to National Convention, 1880).
