WOLTERSTORFF, John H., president Wolterstorff-Haskell Range and Furnace Co .; born in Chester County, Mo., Jan. 22, 1852; son of Frederick and Amalia (Wenzel) Wolterstorff; educated in the public schools; married at St. Paul, Minn., June 21, 1874, to Caroline Nien- hauser. Began as a sheet metal worker, 1869, at St. Paul: started in business in St. Paul in 1873, the name of firm changing to Wolterstorff & Moritz, deal- ers in hardware and manufacturers of tinware. 1879; began manufacturing steel ranges, 1882, and in 1887 the name of the firm became the Wolterstorff- Haskell Range and Furnace Co., which still continues. Elected member and served as president of the City Council of St. Paul, 1892-93, and member of Board of Water Commissioners, 1887- 1901, serving as president of that body for three years. Republican. Be- gan career as cabin boy on the great lakes at 10 years of age; school train- ing was restricted to a few months in the winter while the vessel was laid up. Was made master of a vessel at 21. continuing until 26 years of age. under Winslow Brothers, vessel owners of Buffalo, N. Y .; engaged in produce business at Pecatonica, Ill., 1884-88; lo- cated in Duluth, 1888, as member of the firm of La Salle & Co., general vessel commission business; began organizing water freight transportation companies and in 1895 organized the Zenith Tran- sit Co., which soon built 5 of the largest ships on the lakes; upon merger of the principal transportation fleets of the lakes (112 vessels) into the Pittsburg Steamship Co., he was made vice presi- dent and general manager, a position he held until Jan., 1904. Organized the Zenith Furnace Co., Duluth, of which he is president. Married at Pecatonica, Ill., Jan., 1880 to Miss Carrie L. Kilgore.
