Began as private sec- retary to general manager Chicago & Northwestern Ry., Chicago, III., 1875, continuing until 1878; transferred to auditor's office, Chicago, St. Paul & Omaha Ry., at Hudson, Wis., remaining there until the offices were removed to St. Paul, and continued with the com- pany until 1876; entered employ of wholesale grocery and provision firm of Jos.
