Cheney of Plaistow, Nov. 23, 1780. He was b. Dec. 5, 1756, in Plaistow. He was in Capt. Jere. Gilman's company, of Col. John Nixon's regiment. In 1779, July 7, he bought one-fourth of lot No. 46 in the second division of Perry- town (Sutton), and was one of the original petitioners for the incorporation of Sutton, May 21, 1783. In 1823 he was in Jefferson county, N. Y., and reported to be 63 years old at the issue of pensions in 1819, and received a pension for services in the Revolution, on the Massachusetts line. Mary Cheney was admitted to the church and baptized Feb. 1, 1781, and soon after moved to Canaan to reside.

Clark Ela, b. in Haverhill, Mass., July 14, 1756, son of Samuel and Mary ( Homans) Ela ( No. 154, ) of Haverhill and Londonderry. He married - Fulton, of Londonderry, and had one son, b. in L. He was admitted to the church by baptism, Feb. 17, 1781, and died in Derry.

Lieut. John Darling, b. in Amesbury, Mass., Sept. 27, 1716, was a son of John and Mary (Brown) Darling. He married, first. Phebe Roberts, daughter of Daniel, Jr., and Mehitable (Davis) Roberts, and had five children, b. in Hampstead (see p. 409, Vol. 1.). He married, second, Hannah Roberts (No. 158), and was admitted to the church by letter from the church in Hopkinton, June 24, 1781. He removed to Hopkinton, from Hampstead, about 1760.

Hannah Roberts, b. in Hampstead, April 19, 1740, a daughter of Daniel and Martha (Heath) Roberts (No. 31). She married Lieut. John Darling (No. 157), and was admit- ted to the church by letter from the church at Hopkinton, June 24, 1781.

Lieut. John Harriman, b. in Haverhill, Mass., Feb. 14, 1738, a son of Abner and Sarah (Merrill) Harriman, of Ha- verhill and Hampstead. His father was one of the first settlers in Hampstead, the father of Jassael Harriman men- tioned on p. 309, Vol. 1. Abner Harriman was a son of Matthew and Elizabeth (Swan) Harriman, son of Leonard Harriman, the emigrant, of Rowley, Mass. He was admitted to the church May 26, 1783. He resided at the " Moulton homestead." Lieut. John Harriman d. Aug. 6, 1822, and was buried in the Hadley cemetery. (Page 313, Vol. 1.)

Abigail Clement, b. in Haverhill, Mass., March 7, 1748, fifth daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Bartlett) Clement, of Haverhill. She married Lieut. John Ilarriman (No. 159), and was admitted to the church May 26, 1783. She had children, b. in Hampstead :-
I. Sarah, b. July 8, 1766; m. William Moulton, 1787 (see p. 372, Vol. 1).
II. Abigail, b. April 10, 1774.

James True, b. in Hampstead, March 23, 1759, a son of Rev. Henry and Ruth (Ayer) True (Nos. 1 and 72). Ile was a graduate from Harvard College, 1780. He preached in Virginia and in Portland, Me. He died unmarried, Jan. 6, 1795. He was admitted to the church June 6, 1785.

James Kimball, b. in Hampstead, Feb. 19, 1770, a son of Joseph and Abiah ( Muzzey) Kimball, and grandson of Dea. Benjamin and Mary (Eaton) Kimball (No. 22). He was admitted to the church June 17, 1785, and died in Hamp- stead, unmarried, March 2, 1790, and was buried in the vil- lage cemetery.

Rev. Tillius Howe, b. in Henniker, May 1, 1750, a son of Jonathan and Lydia (Bingham) Howe. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College, April 17, 1787, and received a call to Hampstead, which he accepted, and preached several months, but was dismissed " as not suitable for the place." He married a daughter of Anthony and Ruth Stickney, of Chester and Pembroke. He was pastor of a church at Sharon, Vt., and died in Fryeburg, Me., September, 1830.

Rev. John Kelly, b. in Amesbury, Mass., Feb. 22, 1763, a son of John and Elizabeth (Hoyt) Kelly, of Amesbury. (See Autobiography, by Rev. John Kelly, p. 46, Vol. 1.) He married Abigail Dearborn (No. 171). He was admitted by letter from the Second Church at Amesbury, Dec. 5, 1792. lle died in Hampstead, Nov. 23, 1848, and was buried in the village cemetery.

Barnes Morrill, b. in South Hampton, bapt. Jan. 24, 1750. a son of Simeon and Sarah (Morrill) Morrill, of South Hampton, and later of Hampstead (Nos. 131 and 132). He married Abigail Davis (No. 166), and was admitted to the church by letter from the church at Londonderry, Jan. 27, 1793. and was buried in the village cemetery.

Abigail Davis, b. Dec. 9, 1760, in Hampstead, daughter of Obediah and Sarah (Colby) Davis of Hampstead. She mar- ried Barnes Morrill (No. 165), and was admitted to the church from the Londonderry church, Jan. 27, 1793. She died in Hampstead, Feb. 29, 1844, and was buried in the village cemetery. She had children, buried in the village cemetery at Hampstead :-

Jonathan Carlton Little, b. in Plaistow, June 29, 1769, a son of Nathaniel and Mary (Carlton) Little (see p. 351, Vol. 1). He married, first, Meribah Farnum Hale, in April, 1793, a daughter of Ebenezer and Meribah (Roberts) Hale, of Hampstead. She died Nov. 14, 1801, aged 33 years. He then married his cousin, Phebe Poor (No. 227). During his father's absence in the Revolutionary war, though only nine years old, he had entire charge of the large farm, with his younger brother Nathaniel (No. 256). Capt. Jonathan Lit- tle was very regular in his habits, and it has been said that he rose every morning before the sun for forty years in suc- cession. He voted at every presidential election, from that of Washington to his decease (Feb. 10, 1856). He attended the annual town meeting for fifty-six years, with but four exceptions. He served several years as selectman. He took great delight in the Bible, which he read habitually, and the sanctuary was his unfailing resort on the Sabbath until he was detained by the infirmities of age. He had children by his first wife :-

Hampstead (see p. 416, Vol. 1). Mr. Johnson d. Ang. 21, 1795. She was adm. to the church as a widow, June 4, 1799. She mar., second, Joseph Warner Burroughs of Hampstead, June 3, 1799. The church records show that she was disciplined, May 6, 1798, but "appeared before the church, and asked pardon and forgiveness of God ; and ex- pressed her desire to be continued in the fellowship and com- munion of the church, and was freely accepted ; and may God forgive, accept of her, and save her, through the Re- deemer of his word." On June 12, 1831, she was again disciplined for a neglect of publie worship, and as she ex- pressed no desire ever again to attend the worship of that denomination, she was separated from the church.

Reuben Mills, b. in Plaistow (now Atkinson ) in 1760, a son of John and Abigail ( Emerson) Mills (see No. 60) of Hampstead. He mar., first, Betsey Burns, who had two children b. in Hampstead (see p. 422, Vol. 1). She d. Dec. 11, 1784, and he then mar., second, Ruth Kelly (No. 177). He was adm. to the church Aug. 13, 1797. He was dis- missed to the church at Dunbarton, before 1834. He d. at the home of a son-in-law, Thomas Wilson, at Dunbarton, July 17, 1847, aged 87 years. It is said that, " during his life, he read the Bible through 100 times."

Moses Little, b. in Plaistow, Sept. 9, 1739, a son of Samuel and Hannah (Sewell) Little of Plaistow (now At- kinson ) (see No. 14). He mar. Mary Noyes of Atkinson (No. 181). He was adm. to the church July 1, 1797, and was elected deacon, May 3, 1804. and continued till his death, March 26. 1816. He was a carpenter and builder, and resided where William A. Emerson now resides. He was also prominent in town affairs, and served on the committees of the town in the Revolution.

Mary Noyes, b. in Atkinson, in 1742, a daughter of Capt. James and Sarah (Little) Noyes of Atkinson, who resided where the late James Henry Noyes resided. She mar. Moses Little (No. 180), and was adm. to the church July 2, 1797. She d. Oct. 23, 1823, in Hampstead. She had no children.

Abigail (or, Nabby ) Patten, b. in Amesbury, Mass., bapt. Oct. 15, 1772, a daughter of John and Ruth (Pillsbury) Patten, of Amesbury. She married Dr. Joshua Sawyer of Hampstead, who d. in Hampstead, Nov. 2, 1829, aged 62 years. She was admitted to the church July 2, 1797, and was dismissed, and afterwards received to the Congregational Church of Haverhill, Mass., Sept. 25, 1843. She d. March 4, 1847. A daughter, b. in Hampstead-Anna. b. 1810 ; d. in 1815.

Rev. True Kimball, b. in Plaistow, Jan. 28, 1757, a son of Jonathan and Abigail (True) Kimball, who was elected deacon of the North Parish Church in 1739 (see No. 21). Hle was graduated in the class of 1778, at Harvard College. and studied for the ministry. Hle preached in Amherst and Newbury, Mass., and his final charge was at Hampstead as a supply, where he died. For several months before his death he was partially deranged, and was complained of by Dea. Joseph French "as walking disorderly before the church." He " was placed on probation " several times for the " fault of neglecting the public worship and ordinances of the gos- pel." "Deacon French said in church meeting that . Brother True Kimball told him that he denied the entire depravity of human nature, and has also said. as nearly as I can remem- ber, that the devils in hell are not wholly depraved.' On ac-

count of these things it is my desire that the church will admonish and deal with my brother Kimball according to the rules of the gospel."
On April 20, 1814, the committee of the church, Moses Little, Abner Rogers, and John True, presented resolutions recommending dismissal from the church fellowship, which was done.
The following account of his death appears on the church records : "On the 17th day of July, 1816, about 10 o'clock A. M., Mr. Kimball put an end to his life in his barn, with the long reins of his chaise, without being supposed of such a design, only as he seemed to be inelined to Universalism and infidelity."
He married Jane Short, at Newbury, Mass., who was b. in 1761, and who died in Hampstead, Jan. 22, 1841, at the house now occupied by John Eastman, known as "the Jane Kimball house." They had children :-

1. Moses C., mar. Amanda MI. Stevens; resided at the homestead in Plaistow. Ile died Oct. 3, 1876. He was clerk and treasurer of the church and Sunday school for many years, and superintendent of the Sunday school. He was a deacon of the North Par- ish Church from 1862 to his death. They had one child, Charles William, b. in 1865, d. young (see 407).
2. Elizabeth Ann, d. unmarried, in 1860, an invalid for many years.
3. Mary Noyes, d. an infant.
4. Rev. Joseph, b. in Plaistow; prepared for college at Andover, Mass .; graduated from Amherst College in 1857. He has been principal of an academy in Mifflin- burg, Pa., an instructor at Phillips Andover Acade- my, superintendent of schools at Massalon, O., coun- ty examiner of teachers and an instructor at Mobile, Ala. IIe was ordained as an evangelist at Lynnfield, Mass., in 1883, and as pastor of the First Evangelist Church at Hampton Falls, in September, 1884, to 1901. He is the present pastor of the North Parish of Haverhill Congregational Church. (See 150th anniversary proceedings. )

Martha Burns, b. in Andover, Mass., 1739, a daughter of Joseph and Martha (French) Burns, of Andover. She mar- ried Stephen Page of Hampstead, in 1760, and was admitted to the church as a widow May 6, 1798.

wife. Feb. 18, 1813. and was admitted to the church May 6, 1798. She died in Hampstead. Sept. 26, 1859, aged 89 years. She had no children.

Robert Emerson, b. in Hampstead, July 9, 1746, a son of Benjamin and Hannah ( Watts) Emerson of Hampstead. (Nos. 37 and 38.) He married Mary Webster (No. 187), and was admitted to the church May 20, 1798. He resided at the Moody Brickett place, now occupied by Mr. John F. Brown (No. 521). He died Nov. 18, 1809, and was buried in the village cemetery.

Mary Webster, b. in Hampstead, March 20, 1747. a daugh- ter of John and Elizabeth (Lunt) Webster (No. 85). She married Robert Emerson (No. 186), and was admitted to the church May 20, 1798. She was the mother of eight chil- dren (pp. 411 and 367. Vol. 1). She died in Hampstead, and was buried in the village cemetery.

Sally French, b. in Hampstead, Sept. 15, 1768, a daughter of Joseph, Jr., and Judith (Diamond) French (Nos. 103, 104). She married Joshua, son of Samuel and Susannah (Griffin) Stevens (see Nos. 63 and 64). They removed to Enfield. She was admitted to the church Nov. 1, 1798, and asked for dismissal to the church at Canaan in 1824, but the request was denied her, upon complaint of her brother. Dea. Joseph French, that she had not satisfactorily settled the estate of their mother, and refused full share to the brother. Ezra French. (Church records.)

Col. Benjamin Emerson, b. in Hampstead, April 2, 1740, a son of Benjamin and Hannah ( Watts) Emerson (Nos. 37, 38). He married Mary Tucker (No. 191), and was admitted to the church May 5, 1799. Ile was owner of a mill, and resided where the late Dr. J. C. Eastman resided. He died April 21, 1811, and was buried in Hampstead village ceme- tery (see p. 369, Vol. 1).

Mary Tucker, b. in Kingston, May 5, 1750, daughter of Jacob and Lydia (Lunt) Tucker. She married Col. Benja- min Emerson (No. 190), and was admitted to the church May 5, 1799, but to " full communion," as a widow, Sept. 1, 1811.

Maria Emerson, b. in Hampstead, Oct. 5, 1777, daughter of Col. Benjamin and Ruth (Tucker) Emerson (Nos. 190, 191). She was admitted to the church, aged 22 years, but " without the indulgence of communing at the Lord's table until she could more clearly ascertain her fitness for that ordinance."

Benjamin Dudley Emerson, b. in Hampstead, April +, 1781, son of Col. Benjamin and Ruth (Tucker) Emerson (Nos. 190, 191). He was "admitted to the church May 5, 1799, aged 18, but without the indulgence of communing at the Lord's table until he could more clearly ascertain his fitness for that ordinance." He became a member in full communion before 1830, and was dismissed to Boston in 1843. He was the founder of the Emerson High School of Hampstead, and his will has been copied on p. 233, Vol. 1. Also other mention of him on p. 233, and under " Educational Work " in that volume. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College, 1805, and was a teacher for many years in Boston and vicinity. He died at Jamaica Plain, Oct. 1, 1872.
