Mr. Ordway was a life-long resident of Hampstead, and was always interested in its welfare, and has served it in various capacities, being its representative to the Legis- lature in 1862, and again in 1863. He was a man of strict integrity, and his judgment and counsel were held in high esteem. (See photo, Vol. 1.)

Lydia Currier Jones, b. in South Hampton, June 5, 1812, a daughter of Joseph, Jr., and Mary A. (Bradbury) Jones of South Hampton, and granddaughter of Joseph and Miss (Blaisdell) Jones of Newburyport, Mass. She mar., first, Amos Ring, who was b. in Amesbury, Mass., May 1, 1810, and d. in Hampstead, Jan. 13, 1875. He was a son of Jonathan Ring, who was b. in Amesbury, Oct. 13, 1775, and d. 1855, and his wife Priscilla (Martin), who was b. Feb. 25, 1774, and d. 1857, in Amesbury. Amos and Lydia (Jones) Ring, settled first in Ware, Mass., later in Atkinson, and moved to Hampstead, where Amasa Hunt now re- sides. She was adm. to the church March 2, 1862. They had children :-

Dis. and rec. to unite with the First Congregational Church in Lowell, under the pastoral care of Rev. Horace James. They had a daughter, Elvira.

She was adm. to the church Sept. 2, 1862, and d. in Danville, N. Y., Nov. 4, 1875 ; she was buried in the village cemetery, aged 28 years. She had children :- Leroy S., d. Oct. 6, 1892, and was buried in the village cemetery. She had a daughter b. in Winchester. Sarah Lizzie, b. Jan. 19, 1854 : mar. William A. Syrena Brown, b. in Hampstead, Feb. 1, 1818, a daughter of Joseph Brown (see No. 141, 142) and wife Sally Green- leaf, b. in Haverhill, Mass., and was a member of the First Baptist Church. Syrena mar. Nathan Johnson of Atkinson, June 2, 1842. She united with the church in Hampstead, July 2, 1865, and d. in Hampstead, June 21, 1894. She was buried in the family lot in the village cemetery. Her hus- band d. in 1884. They had children :-

Abbie Ann Johnson, b. in Hampstead, March 24, 1846, a daughter of Nathan and Syrena ( Brown ) Johnson (No. 462). She was educated in the public schools, and at Atkinson Academy. She taught school for several years. She was united with the church July 2, 1865. Dis. and rec. to unite with the Mystic Side Congregational Church at Everett, Mass .. Nov. 1, 1894 ; she is at present a member of the Center Congregational Church at Haverhill, Mass., where she resides.

Clementine Hoyt, b. in Sandown, Feb., 1835, daughter of Ebenezer and Mary (Clark ) Hoyt of Sandown. She mar. Giles F. Marble (No. 665). She was adm. to the church July 2, 1865, and d. in Hampstead. They had children :-


1. Frank Giles, d. aged 4 years.


II. Dana Giles, b. in 1862. educated in the public schools of Hamp- stead, attended Phillips Academy at Exeter, and graduated from Dartmouth College, in 1884; he d. in 1885, while teach- ing in Ilillsboro Academy, of pneumonia, and would have been admm. to the bar in three weeks; he was unmarried.


III. Charles E., mar. Bertha Pressey; resides in Haverhill: was educated in the Hampstead High School, Pinkerton Academy, and attended Dartmouth Medical Lectures. Had son Dana.

Alice Carlton Merrill, b. in Danville, Ill., Dec. 13, 1843, an only child of Guy Merrill, who moved to Danville early in life, and his wife Annie M. Kingsbury of Danville, but a native of Massachusetts. She died when Alice was eleven

years of age, who was cared for by her aunt Mrs. Swan, mostly in the east, and for a time lived in Hampstead. She was educated at Bradford Academy, and after living in Danville, taught school. She was adm. to the church July 2. 1865, and was dis. and rec. to unite with the Presbyterian Church in Danville, Dec. 27, 1868, and at present a member of the same church. She mar. George B. Yeomans, who d. in Danville, May 11, 1871; she has five children, three daughters and two sons.

Anna Louisa Heath. b. in Hampstead, April 18. 1848, a daughter of Eliphalet K. and Alice HI. (Shannon ) Heath (p. 365, Vol. 1). She was educated in the common schools and at New Hampton Academy, and taught school for one year. She married Calvin A. Merrick (No. 734), June 29. 1872. She was admitted to the church July 2. 1865, and is a present member. She has no children.

Eliza Sanborn Chase. b. in Newbury, Mass., Feb. 27, 1792. a daughter of Joseph and Emma ( Chase) Chase ( No. 229). She came with her parents to Hampstead when twelve years old. She married John Ordway, Esq., Jan. 19, 1819 (see p. 334, Vol. 1). She was admitted to the church by baptism, Sept. 3, 1865, and d. in Hampstead, Jan. 21, 1873, and was buried in the village cemetery. They had children :-

1769, and who d. April 25, 1852. Rebecca married Enos Colby, Ang. 31, 1826, who was b. in South Danville, Aug. 20, 1802, and who d. in West Hampstead, Feb. 21, 1855. Mr. and Mrs. Colby kept an old-fashioned hostelry at West Hampstead, the house later purchased by Mr. William Fel- lows and his son-in-law, Edson S. Pressey. They had the honor of entertaining many prominent people of the day, among them the governors of New Hampshire, and many times Daniel Webster, on his trips to this part of the State. Mrs. Colby is said to have possessed a very retiring disposi- tion, vet was a great worker in all directions, and her re- markable skill as a cook made the house of Colby famous to the travelling public. She was admitted to the church by baptism, Sept. 3, 1865, and d. in Hampstead, Aug. 11, 1878. They had children, b. in Hampstead :-

Adeline Harriman, b. in Hampstead, Feb. 23, 1818, a daughter of Moses and Sally (Aver) Harriman (No. 341 ). She married Dr. Joseph Eastman, Feb. 3, 1841, who was b. in London, Jan. 29, 1814, a son of Dr. Joseph and Miriam (Calef) Eastman. He d. in Candia, May 2, 1853. Dr. Eastman was a student of medicine with his brother, Dr. Josiah C. Eastman of Hampstead, and later attended lectures

at Dartmouth Medical College, and settled for practice in Candia about 1840. In 1846 ill health compelled him to sell his practice to Dr. Richard Page of Atkinson, whose son, Frank E. Page, now occupies the late Eastman home- stead in Candia. Adeline Eastman was admitted to the church by baptism, Sept. 3, 1865, and died Nov. 22, 1865, aged 47 years, 9 months, and was buried in Hampstead. Their children were :-

Juliette Harris, b. in Haverhill, Mass., Dec. 28, 1828, a daughter of Stephen Harris, son of Hubbard Harris, of Canaan, and his wife, Mary Jane Colby, of Haverhill. Mr. and Mrs. Harris resided in Hampstead about fifteen years, where Sylvester Ayer now lives, on the " old Harriman farm," and were constant attendants of the church in Hamp- stead for some years. They later moved to Hanover, where they both died. They had children, b. in Haverhill :-


I. Julia E. (above); mar., first, Ralph Harris Haseltine, of West Haverhill, Mass .. and had daughters :-


1. Mary Ida. b. Sept. 9. 1852; mar. Fred W. Noyes of At- kinson. They have no children, and reside in Mel- rose. Mass.


2. Emma Harris. b. in 1853: mar., first, Herbert W. Clark of Hampstead, and has daughters :- 1, Eva M., mar. David Bailey (see p. 366, Vol. 1). 2, Marion, d. young. She married, second, Lorenzo Frost, of Haverhill, Mass .. where they now reside.

She was admitted to the church by baptism. Sept. 3, 1865. and d. in Hampstead. Sept. 27, 1875. and was buried in the village cemetery. She was for several years a prominent leader in the church music.

Little, April 25, 1878. and d. in Ilaverhill in 1890. She was a graduate of the College of Physicians and Surgeons. in Boston, and practised medicine in Hampstead and Haverhill for some years.

Isaac William George, b. in Hampstead, Sept. 12, 1831, a son of Dudley and Betsey (Ordway) George (Nos. 379, 380, 144, 145). He married Mary G. Emerson (No. 487). He was admitted to the church Nov. 5, 1865, and d. in Hampstead, Aug. 11, 1901. His funeral was attended by Rev. R. P. Gardner, and he was buried in the village ceme- tery. He lived on the land purchased of Ebenezer Kezar in 1752 by the George family, in the West village.

Charles Warren George, b. in Hampstead, August, 1845, a son of Warren D. and Sarah Tucker (Griffin) George, of West Hampstead (see No. 380). He married, first, Juliette B. Batchelder ( No. 477), and had four children. He mar- ried, second. , and resides in West Hampstead, on the old George homestead ( see No. 471). He was admitted to the church Nov. 5, 1865, and was dis. and rec. to the Grace M. E. Church, at Haverhill, March 3, 1882.

Annie Elizabeth George, b. in Hampstead, Aug. 31, 1848, a daughter of Warren D. and Sarah T. (Griffin) George (No. 380). She was educated in the public schools and at Pinkerton Academy, Derry, and has been a successful teacher for more than thirty years, at present a teacher in Boston (see p. 364, Vol. 1). She was admitted to the church Nov. 5, 1865.

Jona. Carlton Little, b. in Hampstead. Aug. 19, 1847. a son of Nathaniel H. and Almira (Tewksbury) Little (see Nos. 167, 227). He married Lucy Ann Sawyer. July 26. 1870, who was b. in Boston, Mass. He was a cooper by trade. He was admitted to the church Nov. 5, 1865. As

a young man he always took a great interest in everything that would further the work for good in every department of the church. In the Sabbath school in which he was a teacher, he was beloved by the little children of his class, and left loving messages to them in his last hours. For the older members he was always thoughtful, and ready to step aside to give a welcome. He was chosen leader of the choir in 1868, and held the place as long as he lived. His father had been chorister many years before. John C. Little was a noble-hearted, Christian man. It has been said by a friend, " It was John C. Little's life that led me in the right way." Truly " His works do follow him." He died at the home of his brother, in Atkinson, March 5, 1874.

Clara Ann Irving, b. in Hampstead, March 22, 1848, a daughter of Jacob and Sarah W. (Jaques) Irving (Nos. 283, 278). She married James A. Davis of Sandown (see No. 737). She was admitted to the church Nov. 5, 1865, and resides at West Hampstead. A present member.

Juliette Bond Batchelder, b. in Derry, Jan. 20, 1850, a daughter of Albert A., son of David and Sarah (Abbott) Batchelder, of Raymond, and his wife Clarissa, daughter of Daniel Tappan, son of - - Bond and Ann Hilton (of Eng- land), grandson of John and Juda (Dow ) Bond ( Nos. 55, 56). Albert and Clarissa (Bond) Batchelder had daughters :-


I. Annie, mar. Willard F. Williams of Hampstead (see p. 377, Vol. 1), whose only son, Walter, is at present stationed at Fort Warren, in the U. S. army.


II. Juliette B., married Charles W. George (No. 472), and d. in Haverhill. Mass., Jan. 24, 1897. She was admitted to the church Nov. 5, 1865. Dis. and rec. to unite with the Grace M. E. Church at Haverhill, March 30, 1882. They had chil- dren, all of whom reside in Haverhill :-

I. "Edwina M., b. April, 1848; mar. Charles W. Peasley, who d. in Hampstead, "March 27, 1881, aged 40 years." (Cemetery inscription). She d. April 26, 1869, aged 21; both buried in the village cemetery. In a letter dated Nov., 1856, from Lucinda Peasley, the mother of Charles W., says, "Iam now living in South Paris. Me., where I moved two weeks ago from Buffalo, N. Y. I mar. Mr. Peasley in March last. Charles is my oldest son, b. in Lowell, Mass., March, 1843. I have two other sons, for whom I have found good homes in Paris, Me. My first husband was Thomas L. Walker, and was the father of my children. I put my son Charles out to live in the family of Mr. Benjamin Sargent, in Hampstead, when he was ten years old. His name is Charles Walker, not Charles W. Peasley."

Mary Ann Colby, b. in Hampstead, Sept. 17, 1828. a daughter of Enos and Rebecca (Sanborn) Colby (No. 467). She mar. George Whitefield Eastman, in Derry, N. H., July 4, 1848 (see No. 348 and 349). He d. in Derry, April 18. 1880. She was adm. to the church Nov. 5, 1865. She was "dis. and rec. to unite with the Second Congregational Church in Exeter, under Rev. Dr. Street's pastoral care, Nov. 28. 1889." They had children, b. in Derry.


I. Harriet Ella, b. July 24, 1853; d. March 18, 1855.


II. Frank Hurbert, b. Sept. 5, 1856; d. Oct. 6, 1856.


III. Mary Etta, b. Oct. 9, 1857; d. Jan. 16. 1858.


IV. Laurietta Ada, b. Dec. 3, 1858; graduated P. A., Derry; mar. George W. Libby of Nottingham. Dec. 25. 1879. They reside in Melrose, Mass .. and have children.


1. George Eastman. b. Nov. 17, 1881 ; a student in Institute of Technology.

Mr. and Mrs. Eastman were members of the choir for many years, and constant attendants at the church, not missing a Sunday for a year at a time. Mr. E. was chorister fourteen years, and connected with the Hampstead Musical Society, thirty-one years. Mrs. E. pos-

sessed a fine alto voice, and upon one occasion, was soloist at a cantata, which embraced the best singers in four towns.


After the death of Mr. E., she removed to Haverhill, Mass., for a time, then removed to Exeter, where she re- sided the remainder of her life. She was an active member of the Second Congregational Church until her death, April 12, 1895. Her remains were interred in the old family lot in Hampstead Center.

Sarah Stanwood Flanders, b. in East Hampstead, July 15, 1828, a daughter of Thomas and Mrs. Harriette Sawyer (Horton) Flanders of Hampstead. She married David L. N. Hoyt of Hampstead, Feb. 4, 1849, and was a life long resident of Hampstead. She united with the Congregation- al Church Nov. 5, 1865, and a member of the home depart- ment since its organization. She was a patient sufferer for more than twenty years, and from a dislocated hip for many months, the last seven not able to leave her bed ; d. May 8. 1902. ller funeral was attended by Rev. W. H. Woodsum.


Their only child, Caroline Estelle, b. Oct. 26. 1856 : d. Mar. 3, 1864.

Sarah Maria Noyes, b. in Deering, March 9, 1834, a daughter of Parker and Dorcas ( McCoy) Noyes of Atkin- son. She mar. Samuel Johnson of Boston, Dee. 6, 1854, at Haverhill, Mass. She was adm. to the church Nov. 5, 1865, and was dismissed Jan. 4, 1883. They had children :---


I. Ella F., b. in Atkinson, Nov. 11. 1856; mar. James C. Merrill of North Parish, Haverhill, and have children.


1. Lucy Carlton, b. Aug. 5, 1878, educated at Atkinson Academy. and Miss Wheeler's private school; m. John Greenleaf Howe of Flint. Mich., June, 1900. A daughter, Madeline Frances, b. Dec. 14, 1902.

Hannah Eliza Irving, b. in Hampstead, July 28, 1841, a daughter of JJacob and Sarah W. (Jaques) Irving (Nos. 283, 278). She mar. John S. Titcomb (No. 481). She was adm. to the church Nov. 5, 1865, and later united with the Center Congregational Church of Haverhill, Mass., of which she is a present member. They had children :-


I. Charles Stacy, bapt. in Hampstead, Sept., 1866; m. Aug. 27, 1902, Marion E., daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur E. Hoyt of Atkinson Depot. He is cashier of the Second National Bank of Haverhill.


II. Henry Irving, b. Dec. 9, 1871; d. Aug. 15, 1888.

Ellen Angeline George, b. in Hampstead, Jan., 1843, a daughter of Warren D. and Sarah T. (Griffin) George (see 379, 380). She mar. Samuel James Hersum, and died in West Hampstead, April 7, 1869, and was buried in the vil- lage cemetery. She was adm. to the church Nov. 5, 1865. They had children :- Infant son, d. May 22, 1861, aged 4 mos., and Samuel, who now resides in Haverhill.

" She was adm. to the church by letter from the Congre- gational Church in Salem, Jan. 5, 1866, and was dis. to unite with the Riverside Congregational Church in Haver- hill, Mass., June 28, 1895," of which she is a present mem- ber.
