ATWOOD.
Mr. Charles Atwood, distinguished scholar and prominent lawyer, who died in Boston in 1887, made an extensive research of the Atwood family in England and America. From his MS., in the possession of Mrs. George W. Warren, of Somerville, Mass., a niece of Mr. Atwood, we read : " The name of Atwood originated in Coulsdon, a parish in Surrey county, twelve miles south of London, and adjoining Croydon and Sanderstead. As early as 1313 tenants of estates of the Abbey of Cherster were Peter, John, and Geoffrey Atte-Wodee, named from their resi- dence " at the wood." This estate had 150 acres of land, and had been in the family 150 years. The first Atwood buried in the church in the village of Sanderstead was in 1520, A. D.
Nicholas, the third son of John Atwood of Sanderstead, served Queen Elizabeth from the second year of her reign, May 14, 1586, leaving a wife, Olive Harman, and sons, Harman, John, Nicholas, Thomas, James, John. 2d, or Jonathan, Richard, daughters Alice and Susan.
John Atwood, who came to Plymouth in 1635, was the second son of Nicholas and Olive (Harman) Atwood, and his nephew, Harman Atwood, was first mentioned as a freeman in Boston, Dec. 26, 1642. He was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery company in 1644. He married Ann, daughter of William Copp, and lived near Court House Square, in Boston. They had a son, John, baptized in Boston, Sept. 5, 1647, " when five days old." He married Sarah -. He was a deacon of the North Church in Boston twenty-one years, and a member of

the Ancient and Honorable Artillery in 1673. He died in 1714, according to a stone in Copp's Hill burying ground. It was the opinion of Mr. Charles Atwood, and also of A. Burnside At- wood, now of the engineering department, Boston City Hall, to whom we are indebted for much of this sketch, that James Atwood, born in Boston in 1673, had a son, John, b. in 1714, in one of the surrounding centres of Boston, that the son James was deceased before 1729, when the estate of the father, John Atwood, was disposed of on Middle street, Boston, and that the son John was brought up by his half unele, John Atwood, who mar. Hannah Bond, and settled in Bradford, Mass. JJohn and Hannah (Bond) Atwood were the parents of Joseph Atwood, mar. Sarah Chresdee, whose son, Moses, mar. Mary Tenney, and were the parents of Harriet Atwood, later the wife of Rev. Samuel Newell, the missionary. The Atwood family of Atkin- son were descendants of John and Hannah (Bond) Atwood.
John Atwood, son of James, b. in 1714, was the pioneer of the family in Hampstead, being one of the original petitioners for the township in 1744, and probably came to the town in 1742. He built the house now known as the Horace Adams home, and it was one of the seven farms in town mentioned by Judge Smith, in 1849, as having been in the possession of the same family for one hundred and fifty years. This house descended from John Atwood to his son James, who married Molly Lowell, and then to their son, Moses, who sold it to Mr. Adams in 1851. Moses Atwood, son of John and Ruth (Whittaker) Atwood, built a house on the corner near by, about 1780, which was burned in 1884.

His father bought of Moses True, Jan. 30, 1760, the same lot, for 12 pounds lawful money. Young Caleb Atwood moved to Weare from Hampstead in the spring of that year, and built a cabin on the side of Mt. Dearborn, the highest honse in town. It stood just south of the house at present owned by Josiah G. Dearborn, which is now the flower garden, and was one mile west of Meadow Brook, on the road over the hill to Deering, " and was on the west side of the way," and soon after it was built a gale took the roof off, carried it over the road, and laid it down softly in the stumpy field.
Mr. Caleb Atwood was a prominent man in Weare, a soldier in the Revolution, active in town matters, and a member of the First Church. In his old age he went to live with his son Joshua. in Antrim. After that he lived in Deering, where he died, aged 76 years.
