MEMORIAL OF THE CHURCH OF

Oklahoma, March 29, 1902: After teaching for five years subsequent to my graduation from the Hampstead High School, in 1889, I went to Northfield Seminary in 1894, where I studied for two years. Here a desire to do Chris- tian work was fostered and developed, and in December, 1896, the Lord thrust me forth to active service. At that time I went to Barrington, where I remained in evangelistic work until the following September, when I was permitted to extend my preparation for more active service by going to

the Bible Institute founded by D. L. Moody in Chicago. While in the Bible Institute I studied and had different forms of Christian work assigned to me for every week, such as house to house visitation, meetings for policemen at the police stations, cottage prayer meetings, women's meet- ings, children's meetings, Sunday school classes. From there I went at once into evangelistic effort, and was engaged in Bible teaching for some evangelists. In June, 1899, I went to Kansas to engage in missionary and evangelistic work. While in Kansas I supplied one church for three months and

another for seven months in the capacity of pastor, or par- tially so. I worked in other churches, too, but in those oth- er's my work was more like that of an evangelist.

In May, of 1901, I came to Oklahoma, where my summer was spent in working in two small, weak churches, and teaching the day and Bible school. In October I began my duties as principal of the school here in Carney, which is a small town. One of the churches is located here, and I have been acting as pastor of it, as well as teaching this winter. I was called to the pastorate last fall, and was formally ap- probated in October, 1901.

I am glad of the help that the church in Hampstead gave me when I was younger. May God still use it in forming character and developing a Christian life for many another one."

Nov. 29, 1902, Miss Williams writes from Alvaretta, Okla., where she is stationed doing enjoyable work, and also is cor- responding secretary of the Y. P. S. C. E. of the Territorial Union of Oklahoma and Indian Territories, and sent the following original lines as " quite true to her life."

" THE MAGIC TOUCH.

The earth was dark. and dead, and cold, And bleak and desert the barren wold; No trace of life, no beauty fair, No charm of Nature to hold me there.

The soft rains fell, and soft winds blew,

The touch was gentle, but each root knew, A thrill of life came rushing then,

And earth burst forth into life again.

My life was dark, and dead, and cold,

While back on itself it inward rolled; No trace of love that brightens life,

No kindly action, but discord, strife.

My sont was swept by breath divine, And to that barren, cold heart of mine, A burst of love and kindness came,

And earth its sisterhood then could claim".
