was a son of William and Elizabeth (Jameson) Pressey. of Amesbury, who was a " shoe man " in 1708. and died in 1737, in Amesbury. Wil- liam was a son of John and Marsh (Gouge) Pressey, who came to Sal- isbury in 1639. Paul was a resident of Kingston, and owned the eove- nant August, 1754, " in his own house in Kingston, before several per- sons. apprehending himself as near death."

Abraham Dow, born in Haverhill, Mass. (in that part now Atkinson, at the Dow homestead, now residence of George P. Dow, Esq.), Feb. 23, 1732.


A son of John and Mehitable (Haines) Dow, who settled in Atkinson in 1728. and was one of the first settlers in that part of the town. He married Susannalı Hoyt, born in 1734, a daughter of Micah and Susanna (Colby) Iloyt, of Haverhill and Newtown. They lived near the Salem line, and afterwards in Salem. He was called " Esquire," and married some couples in Hampstead. He was the owner of the mills, afterwards called " Clendennin's mills," on the upper stream of the Spicket river, in Salem. They owned the covenant in 1755, and had children :-


I. Thomas. b. Sept. 18, 1781; mar. Elizabeth Jones; lived in Atkin- son and Salem, and had children :-

2. Relief. mar. James Poor, of Atkinson, and were parents of Jonathan, who mar. Eliza Currier, of Pelham; Charles A., mar. Persis Iloward, and, second, Sara P. Wetherbee. and resided in Boston; and Benjamin Kimball Poor, who mar. Sophia P. Noyes, of Atkin- son, and parents of Charles Herbert of Haverhill, Ellen R., who mar. Rufus P. Clement, now of Merri- mac, Mass., and Persis II., who d. in 1882, unmarried, a successful teacher in Hampstead and Salem for several years.

A son of Otho and Abigail (Kent) Stevens (Nos. 63, 64, ch. mem.), married Hannah Emerson, Ang. 11, 1753. She was born in Hampstead; Nov. 29, 1738, a daughter of Benjamin and Hannah (Watts) Emerson (Nos. 37, 38, ch. mem. ). They owned the covenant, May, 1754, and had eight children, b. in town (see p. 427, Vol. 1).

Ebenezer Mudgett, born in Salisbury, Mass., in 1720.


A son of William and Dinah ( Eastman ) Mudgett, of Salisbury; mar- ried Miriam Johnson, born in Londonderry, a daughter of Michael and Mary (Hancock) Johnson, of Haverhill, Mass., and Londonderry. They owned the covenant, Angust, 1855, and had six children (see p. 422, Vol. 1), and others born in Goffstown, one of whom was Eben, who married, and has descendants living there now. " A brother of Eben Mudgett was ' Bill Mndgett,' who settled over the mountain in Weare, and has many descendants in that region." Miriam Mudgett, as a widow, married Capt. Wm. Marshall, of Hampstead.

Elijah Heath (" commonly called Joshua Heath "), born in Haverhill, Mass., in 1730.


Son of John and Frances (Intchens) Heath; married Hannah Dear- born, who was born in Chester, Oct. 13, 1731, daughter of Ebenezer, commonly called Ebenezer, Jr., and wife, Huldah (Nason) Dearborn, who lived on the Jesse R. Gordon place, in Chester. Elijah and Han- nah (Dearborn) Heath had children : -


1. Nanna, b. in Hampstead, Oct. 21, 1755; mar., Sept., 1775, Jere- miah Underhill, who was a son of John and Joanna (Healey) Underhill, of Chester, whose daughter, Sarah, married Capt. Moses Greenough, of Atkinson. Jeremiah and Anna (Heath) Underhill lived on what is now called Bunker Hill, in Au- burn, and " had nine children, who were all raised in a honse with one large room and a bedroom." He died suddenly, Sept. 16, 1794; she d. May 19, 1844. Their children were :-


1. David, b. in 1756.

3. Benjamin, m. Polly Green.


4. Betsey, m. Samnel Davis, who d. at Concord, in the U. S. service, April 7, 1813. They lived at Hooksett.

Wason, and has one child, George A., mar. Anna G., daughter of Dea. Albert and Sarah A. (Green- ongh , Emerson, of Haverhill.

A daughter of David and Sarah (Osgood) Ring. of Salisbury; married Paul Dustin of Salem. She owned the covenant May 9, 1756.

John Kezer, born in Haverhill, Mass., July 6, 1678.


A son of John and Hannah ( Davis) Kezer, who were killed by the Indians in 1696-7; was probably the first settler in the part of Ilamp- stead that once belonged to Kingston, or the " Peak " (see pp. 152, 361, Vol. 1). He married Judith Heath, b. in Haverhill, Mass. They owned the covenant July 25, 1756. They had ten children (p. 419, Vol. I). Judith. d. in Hampstead, Oct., 1756. John Kezer m., second, Ruth Terrill (No. 88, ch. mem.).

Abigail Kezer, born in Hampstead, Feb. 14, 1738.


A daughter of John and JJudith ( Heath) Kezer, of Hampstead (see Nos. 30, 31). She married Joseph Hancock, Aug. 15, 1754. She owned the covenant, in town, July 25, 1756, and removed to Londonderry. She had several children that went to Ohio to live.

Stephen Colburne, born in 1720, in Weare.


A son of Asa and Lucy (Brown) Colburne, of Weare: married Mary Emerson, b. in Haverhill. Mass., a daughter of Stephen and Hannah (Marden) Emerson, of Hampstead (Nos. 15 and 16, ch. mem.). They owned the covenant July 16, 1755, and moved " up country."

Jonathan Clark, born in Haverhill, Mass., April 28, 1696.


Son of Daniel and Mary (Gutterson) Clark, of Haverhill. Ile married Martha Ela, who was born in Haverhill, June 7, 1715, a daughter of Samuel and Hannah (Clark) Ela, of Haverhill, and removed to Hamp- stead. They owned the covenant April 10, 1757, and died in Hamp- stead. She had two children, Amos and Martha, that d. young. He then married, second, Priscilla Whittaker, and had children :-

Married Hepsibah Poor, who was born in Rowley, Mass., July 16, 1738, and died in Bradford, Vt., July 9, 1808 (see Nos. 32 and 33). They owned the covenant April 23, 1758.

Son of Beniah and Mary (Webster) Colby, of Chester. He married Mary Wells, daughter of Thomas and Ruth Wells, of Chester, her father being killed by John Talford in 1773. They owned the covenant May 7. 1758, as of Chester.


No. 41. Mary Stevens (widow), (see No. 63, ch. men.)


Married Otho Stevens as his second wife, who died in Hampstead, May 21. 1758. She died in Hampstead, April 4, 1771. "Voted, that the expense of the widow Stevens' funeral shall be paid by the town, and that the said widow's household furniture and wearing apparel shall not be taken towards defraying said charges, but shall be given to her youngest daughter." (Town records.)

MEMORIAL OF THE CHURCH OF


A son of Thomas and Mary (Smith) Hale. His father was settled as early as 1734 in Plaistow, the part now Atkinson. on a farm which he received in a deed dated 1734, of one hundred aeres of land. His father was a selectman of Plaistow, in Haverhill District. before the incorpo- ration of the town, in 1745. The son Ebenezer married Susanna Rob- erts, April 28, 1758. She was a daughter of Jonathan Roberts, of Hampstead. They settled in 'Hampstead soon after marrirge, on the farm now a part of Daniel Ayer's farm, as given by his father (above). He died at the house of Ebenezer Ladd, in Haverhill (apparently while on a visit), early in 1774. They owned the covenant May 13, 1760. He was in the French war. He was buried in the Hampstead village cem- etery. They had children, b. in Hampstead :


I. Susannah, b. Nov. 20, 1758; in. Isaac Tewksbury. Jonathan Roberts, b. Nov. 5. 1760; m. Lydia Johnson.


III. Ebenezer, b. Nov. 8. 1763; d. young.


IV. Meribah Farnum, b. April 6, 1768; m. Jonathan C. Little (No. 167, ch. mem.).


The widow, Susanna, m., second, Maj. Edmund Movers, of Hamp- stead, March 14. 1776. and d. in Hampstead, June 25. 1782.

Son of Daniel and Judith Hale, of Newbury. He married, in Hamp- stead, Dec. 13, 1757, Mehitable, daughter of Peter Hale and: Elizabeth (Harriman) Eastman, b. June 28, 1737. By his father's will he received 100 pounds and " the remaining lands in ye Narragansett." Daniel Plummer bought lands of him (No. 178, ch. men.), both of Gloucester, Dec. 1. 1756. They had seven children, b. in Hampstead (pp. 413, 414, Vol. 1. " David Hale was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, Col. Moses Nichols as commander, and many descendants point with pride to his service." (Mrs. G. F. Gilkey, Oshkosh, Wis.)

A son of Abel and Abigail (Stevens) Merrill, of Atkinson. They re- side at the farm formerly known as the " Merrick place," on the East road. IFe married, first, Mary Emery, and bad children :-


I. Stephen, b. Jan. 22, 1767; he was a deaf and dumb mute; settled at the old homestead.


II. Abel, b. Nov. 19, 1763; m. Tamar Kimball; second, Abigail, widow of Samnel Noyes, of Landaff.


III. Hannah, b. April 22, 1762; m. Joshua Poor, of Atkinson (see p. 202, Vol. 1).


IV. Ruth, b. May 5, 1764; m. John Davis; settled on the old home- stead of her father in Atkinson.

They resided on the bank opposite the residence of Frank W. Green- ough, on " East Road," Atkinson. They owned the covenant Nov. 28, 1761.

Benjamin Little, b. Nov. 4, 1732.


A son of Moses and Sarah (Jaques) Little. He married Mary, daughter of Col. Richard Hazen (No. 2, ch. mem.). They owned the covenant Jan. 16, 1763. Mr. Little was a farmer and prominent citizen of Hampstead; d. April 18, 1777. Mary, the widow, married, second, Maj. Edmund Mooers, by whom she had one son (No. 409, ch. mem.). Their children were :-


I. Micajah, b. Nov., 1762; m. Sarah Noyes, of Atkinson; resided in Union and Rockland, Me .; had five children.

MEMORIAL OF THE CHURCH OF


A son of Capt. George and Mary (Kimball) Little, of Hampstead and New Boston. He lived in Hampstead until about 1767, when they re- moved to Goffstown, where he d., Sept. 5. 1813. Ile served in the Rev- olutionary war, was first lieutenant in company 9, of Gen. Stark's regiment, and took part in the battle of Bunker Hill. He was a justice of the peace for many years, and prominent in town affairs. He m. Mary Stevens, a sister of Jacob Stevens of Hampstead, Mrs. Butterfield and Mrs. Annis of Goffstown, and daughter of Timothy and Elizabeth Stevens of Hampstead. They owned the covenant Oct. 16, 1763. They had nine children, three b. in Hampstead.

HAMPSTEAD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.


1764. Joshua Kelly lived in his youth in the family of Capt. John Saw- yer, of South Amesbury (Merrimac), Mrs. Sawyer (Elizabeth Kelly) being an aunt. Afterwards he moved to Atkinson, and after the birth of two children he moved to Conway. He was induced, with others. to go to that place, which was included in the " Peqnatket country." by the glowing descriptions given of the richness of the soil, abundance of game, and other attractions of that region. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary war. as a private. He lived in Atkinson as late as 1765. Ile d. May 1, 1822.

Levi Stevens, b. in Newbury, Mass.


Son of Otho and Abigail ( Kent) Stevens; m. Dolley French in 1759 (see No. 64, ch. mem.); and m., second, Lydia Hills, and had children (p.428, Vol. 1). Levi and Dolley Stevens owned the covenant Aug. 28, 1764. Lydia Hills was b. in Newbury, Mass., Oct. 13, 1740, daughter of Joshua and Hannah (Hunt) Hills (No. 67, ch. mem.).

James Clement, b. in Plaistow, April 2, 1737 ; d. Feb. 3, 1812.


Was a respected citizen in Dunbarton for many years, and deacon of the church there. He m. Elizabeth Little, b. March, 1744, a daughter of Thomas and Mary (Bond) Little, of Atkinson. They owned the covenant Oct. 21, 1764. They had ten children, b. in Dunbarton.

Ruth Atwood, b. in Hampstead, May 20, 1742.


Daughter of John and Ruth (Whittaker) Atwood (see No. 76, ch. mem.). She m. Bond Little, March 16, 1762, He was b. in Hampstead, Nov. 11, 1741, son of Thomas (see No. 13, ch. mem.). He was in Capt. John Hazen's company in the expedition against Crown Point, and the next year moved to Weare, where he was a prominent citizen. They had eleven children, and removed to Deering in 1775, to Newbury, Vt., in 1787, and in 1806 to Hatley, Canada, where he d. July 10, 1811. Ruth d. May 14, 1814, and is said to have been " a pious and excellent woman, o a sedate disposition."

Benjamin Hale, b. in Haverhill, Mass., April 30, 1735.


Son of Thomas and Mary (Smith) Hale, of Atkinson a brother of No. 46. Thomas and Mary (Smith) Hale had children b. in Atkinson, at the family home, near the " old Peaslee place, " on East Road.
