James Mann, b. in Danbury, 1786, a son of John Mann, of Scotland, who d. in Hampstead. September, 1831, aged 75 years, and was buried in the village cemetery. Ile mar- ried Miriam French (No. 313), and removed to Hampstead to care for their relatives (No. 185), and was adm. to the church from Danbury, July 25, 1829, and dis. to Salisbury, N. Il., before 1834.

Miriam French, b. in Hampstead, Dec. 21, 1789, a daugh- ter of Joseph, Jr., and Molly (Tilton) French (Nos. 173 and 174). She married James Mann (No. 312), and was admitted to the church from Danbury, July 25, 1829. Dis- missed to the church in Salisbury, Feb. 24, 1834. A daugh- ter, Mary Jane, was baptized May 19, 1831.

Elizabeth Webster, b. in west precinct of Haverhill, Mass., July 20, 1791, a daughter of Jesse and Abigail (Eaton) Webster of West Haverhill. Jesse, son of Dr. Thomas and Ruth (Haseltine), son of Nathan and Sarah (Low), son of Stephen and Hannah (Ayer), son of John and Mary (Shat- well) Webster of Ipswich, Mass. She married, first, Cross, of Derry, and married, second, James Calef (No. 316), March 17, 1829. She was admitted to the church from the church of Derry, May 30, 1830, and died in Hampstead, Dec. 20, 1867, and was buried in the Village cemetery.

Sarah Hidden Burnham, b. in Essex, Mass., daughter of Jacob, Jr., and Sally (Hidden) Burnham. Parents m. in Essex, Jan. 24, 1801. She m. as second wife of Humphrey C. Cogswell of Hampstead, July 19, 1825, who was b. in Ipswich, Mass., 1800. He built the "brick house " (see Parsonages). She was admitted to the church from the church at Essex, Sept. 5, 1830. Dismissed from this church to Essex church, May 10, 1840. She d. before 1856. They had children :-

Mrs. Elizabeth Webster (Cross) of Derry (No. 314). He was admitted to the church May 6, 1832. He died in Hampstead, Nov. 1, 1855, and was buried in the village cemetery. He was prominent in town and church affairs for several years.

Colby, professor of organic chemistry, Columbia College; interred at Lawrence, Mass. Mr. Colby d. very suddenly, in New York, Oct. 23, 1902, aged nearly 83.


IV. Jerome Danforth, b. Oct. 5. 1829; d. April, 1831; buried in Hampstead.


V. Harriet Mary, b. March 10. 1831; d. August, 1847; buried in IIampstead.

Mary Clarke, b. in Plaistow, Jan. 21, 1800, a daughter of Nathaniel and Abigail (Woodman) Clarke of Plaistow. She married as the first wife of Isaac Smith of Hampstead (see No. 198). July 18, 1822. She was admitted to the church May 6, 1832, and died in Hampstead, June 6, 1833. They had children :-

Mary Dearborn Kelly, b. in Hampstead, July 6, 1806, a daughter of Rev. John and Abigail (Dearborn ) Kelly (Nos. 168, 171). She was admitted to the church May 6, 1832, and d., unmarried, in Hampstead, May 23, or 29, 1841. "A lady of serious character and superior intellect."

William Tenney, b. in Topsfield, Mass., Jan. 6, 1797, a son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Jewett ) Tenney of Topsfield. Ile married Emma Chase, b. in West Newbury, Mass., Feb. 21, 1797, daughter of Joseph and Emma (Chase) Chase (No. 219). They were married in Hampstead, Jan. 25, 1826. He was admitted to the church May 27, 1832, and the church records note, "William Tenney and wife were dis. and ree. to the church at Monson, Me., October, 1841." Date of Mrs. Tenney's admission to the church not given in the church records. He died in Monson in 1872. and Mrs. Tenney in Greenville, Me., in 1881. They had children :

He writes of the memory of his parents : "But the path of the just is as a shining light that shineth more and and more unto the perfect day. So was their path. They liave left a brightness in my memory which increases more and more as the days and the years go by."

Emerson (No. 301), June 29, 1834, and was admitted to the church July 29, 1832. Resided in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. " March 31, 1836, bapt. Elizabeth Kelly, their daughter."

Ruth Ayer Howard b. in Dunbarton, March 22, 1798. a daughter of John and Sarah (Trne) Howard (No. 247). She was a tailoress in Hampstead, and d., unmarried, about 1877, and was buried in the village cemetery. She was admitted to the church " by baptism, May 5, 1833."

Jabez True Howard, b. in Dunbarton, Ang. 22, 1804, a son of John and Sarah ( True ) Howard (No. 247). He com- menced his theological course at Gilmanton in 1838, and was pastor of a church at West Charlestown, Vt., and also in Holland, Vt., about twenty years. He left preaching a few years before his death in Charlestown, where he was buried. He was admitted to the church in Hampstead, "by baptism and confession, May 5, 1833. Dis. and rec. to the Christian Orthodox Church at Charlestown, Vt., Dec. 17, 1859." He married, first, Elizabeth S. Gilman of Mere- dith, and had one child, that d. young, and was buried in

Hampstead cemetery. His second wife was Mrs. Martha Page, of Albany, Vt. They had one daughter, Mrs. Belle Howard Cobb : lives in Morristown, Vt., and has two daugh- ters. Mrs. Jabez Howard married, after Mr. Howard's death, Mr. Bernard, of West Charlestown, Vt.

Mary Jane Sargent. b. in Amesbury, Mass., June 3, 1803. a daughter of Ichabod Bernard and Ruth (Patten) Sargent, of Amesbury. She married Benjamin Pillsbury of Hamp- stead, Dec. 29, 1830, who d. 1884 (see p. 330, Vol. 1). She was admitted a member of the church from the church at Amesbury, Mass., July 10, 1835. Rev. John McClinch Bartley, b. in Londonderry, May 15, 1799. His father, Dr. Robert Bartley, graduated from the University of Edinborough, in Scotland, and was one of the colony of Scotch Presbyterians who settled in Londonderry. His mother ( Maria McClinch) was a lady of great refinement and force of character. They had five children :-


I. Ingh, who was for many years a physician in Londonderry.


II. Robert, a resident of Windham, N. II., where he kept a country store most of his life. Ile was noted for strict integrity and usefulness as a citizen and officer in the Presbyterian church of that town.


III. Maria, who died in early womanhood; had a twin sister.


IV. Esther, who was known in Hampstead as " Aunt Esther "; had a highi place in the hearts of the family of Rev. John McC. Bartley, her brother, as well as in the hearts of the Hamp- stead people generally. She became the wife of Rev. John Dickey, and went to reside in a village near Genesee, N. Y., and died there abont 1860. She was of a lovely character. generous, self-denying. and more than ready with ministra- tions to the needy and suffering.

He prepared for college at Pinkerton Academy, Derry, and entered Amherst College, but failing health prevented his completing the college comse, but he was given the honorary degree of A. M. He took his theological course at Andover, Mass., where his most intimate friend was William G. Schauflaer, who afterwards was the well-known missionary at Constantinople. Ile married, first. Mary Ann Morrison, and, second, mar. Susan Dana ( No. 355). He was admitted to the church by letter, Oct. 13. 1836, and ordained

to preach as an evangelist on that date. He was dismissed from the pastorate after serving twenty-one years, and died in Kittery Point, Me., in 1860 (see Vol. 1, p. 324).

Elbridge Gerry Kent. b. in Hampstead, Feb. 8, 1817, a son of Dea. Jonathan and Clarissa ( Page) Kent ( Nos. 145, 146). He married Martha Nutting, and resided in Holland, N. Y. He was admitted to the church Nov. 11, 1836, and was dismissed to the church in Holland, Oct., 1841. They had children :-

Edwin Ahira Kent, b. in Hampstead, July 15, 1823, son of Dea. Jonathan and Clarissa ( Page ) Kent (Nos. 145, 146). He married Abbie F. Ward of Boston, Mass., in San Fran- cisco, and resided in Jackson, Calif. He was admitted to the church Nov. 18, 1836. They had children :-

Edmund Tucker Eastman, b. in Hampstead, Nov. 6, 1820, son of Joshua and Susanna (Chase) Eastman (Nos. 213, 230), (p. 323, Vol. 1). He was admitted to the church by baptism, Nov. 18, 1836, and Sept. 5, 1845, he was dismissed "to unite with the Congregational Church in Boston, under the pastoral care of Rev. Mr. Rogers." He married Mrs. Clara A. Eastman, and by her had one son, Edmund Chase Eastman, of Brookline, Mass.

Jesse Brooks Davis, b. in Hampstead, Dec. 13, 1818, son of Ezra and Mary (Garland) Davis ( Nos. 234, 235). He

worked his way through the college course in the College of New Jersey, where he was graduated in 1846. He was graduated from the Theological School in Princeton, N. J., and ordained a minister over the church at Plattsburg, N. Y., in 1849. His first pastorate was to Bridesburg, Pa., Presbyterian Church. Ile afterwards was located at Titus- ville, N. J., and at Hightstown, where he died. He resigned October, 1887, on account of ill health, but was made pastor emeritus. He was admitted to the Hampstead church Nov. 28, 1836. Dismissed, to unite with the church in New York city under the pastoral care of Rev. Dr. Phillips, Nov. 1, 1843. Ile married Jane P. Voorhees, Sept. 11, 1849. They had five children : one died in infancy. The oldest, Mary Edith, d. unmarried, in Hightstown, N. J., February, 1900. Charles Edgar studied law, and later studied for the minis- try, and preached in the West. Ada married John Endi- cott, a lineal descendant from Gov. Endicott of Massachu- setts, and now resides in Atlantic City, N. J. The youngest, Eva, married Samuel Dodd, and resides in Pittsfield, Mass. Rev. J. B. Davis married, second, C. Matilda Hendrickson. June 7, 1876.

James Brown, b. in Hampstead, November, 1768, son of Joseph and Susanna (Johnson ) Brown (Nos. 141, 142). He married Alice Ferren, and was admitted to the church Nov. 28, 1838, and d. in Hampstead, and was buried in the village cemetery (see p. 406, Vol. 1).

Harriet Newell Calef, b. in Hampstead. April 12, 1816, a daughter of James and Anna ( Kimball) Calef ( Nos. 316, 226). She was admitted to the church Nov. 18, 1836, and dismissed to the First Church in Derry, of which she was a member at the time of her decease. She married Daniel J.

Louisa Currier, b. in Hampstead in 1811, daughter of John (son of Ezekiel and Susanna ( Emerson) Currier (No. 215), of West Hampstead, and Hannah Gile, b. March 12, 1782, in Haverhill, daughter of James Gile and wife Debo- rah (Emerson) of Hampstead. She married Samuel Davis of Atkinson, who d. a few years after their marriage, of con- sumption. She was admitted to the church Jan. 1, 1838, and dismissed to the church in Atkinson, under the care of Rev. Mr. Pierce. April 10, 1843. They had two daughters :-


I. Louisa, a graduate of Haverhill High School, and taught school several years in Quincy, Mass. She mar. George Kent, and d., aged 27.


II. Lucy, graduate Haverhill High School, and d. soon after, aged 16 years.


Mrs. Davis was a member of the Center Church in Haver- hill at the time of her decease, in March, 1880. She, with both of her daughters, were buried in the cemetery on the hill in West Hampstead.

Frank Kelly of Kingston. She was admitted to the church by letter from the First Church of Lowell, Mass., June 15, 1838.

Nathaniel Ordway, b. in West Newbury, Mass., Jan. 19, 1803, a son of Nathaniel and Martha (Bartlett) Ordway. of West Newbury. He married Ann W. Bolton (No. 393). He was admitted to the church in Hampstead, July 1, 1838. and dismissed May 1. 1857. They lived in Hampstead about eight years. and removed to Bradford, Mass., where their only daughter resides. He served in the civil war, a mem- ber of company G. 2d Mass. Heavy Artillery, and died of yellow fever, at Newburne, North Carolina, Oct. 10. 1864. and was buried there, aged 60 years.

Sarah Ayer, b. in Hampstead, April 25, 1792, a daughter of Hezekiah and Thankful ( Williams ) Aver (see No. 272). She was admitted to the church July 1, 1838, and was a member at her death, which occurred in Haverhill, Mass .. Jan. 24, 1875. She was buried in the Hampstead village cemetery. She married, first, Stephen Nichols, Oct. 25, 1810 (see No. 290), and had children :-

II. Hezekiah Ayer, b. Dec. 29, 1813; m. Maria Taylor of Fayette- ville, N. Y. He lived many years in the south, and d. Jan. 5, 1899, in Connecticut.


She mar., second, Moses Harriman, May 17, 1817, and had one child :- Adeline (No. 468).

Mrs. Harriet Ilsley, a widow, lived for a time at what is known as the Moody Brickett farm. She was admitted to

the church July 1, 1838, and was dismissed to unite with the Congregational Church in Lowell, Mass., March 26, 1843. Children : Moses Atkinson, Harriet Susan, Eunice and JJona. Adams Illsley, who resided in Georgetown, Mass.

Ruth Kimball Conner, b. in Troy, N. Y., Dec. 8, 1808, a daughter of James and Lydia (Brown) Conner, of Fremont. Her mother was a daughter of Benjamin and Ruth (Kim- ball) Brown (see No. 21). She was educated in the public schools of Cambridge, Mass., and had a good education for the times, and retained a remarkable memory. She married Daniel Emerson (p. 367, Vol. 1). She was admitted to the church July 1, 1838, and was a member at her death, April 18, 1895. Her funeral was attended by Rev. R. P. Gardner, and she was buried in the village cemetery, aged 87 years, and 4 months. Their children were (see p. 367, Vol. 1) :-

in Hampstead, and was buried in the village cemetery, in the family lot. It is related that Miss Mary had " her prepara- tions all made, even to buying her china, but then decided not to marry." The same china is now in the possession of a grand-niece, Miss Helen Ayer Vose, of Chelsea, Mass.

Mary Emerson, b. in Hampstead, Aug. 20, 1823, daughter of John, Jr., and Betsey (Emery) Emerson (Nos. 241 and 242). She married John Bradley of Danville. She was admitted to the church July 1, 1838. They had children :-


I. Albert E., bapt. Sept., 1848; a teacher at present in Bryant & Stratton's Commercial School of Boston.


IT. Mary E., bapt. July, 1853; m. Page Hunt of Danville.

Sarah George, b. in Hampstead, June 17, 1794, a daugh- ter of Jonathan and Hannah (Currier) George (No. 243). She was admitted to the church July 1, 1838, and dismissed May 5, 1857. She d., unmarried, in West Hampstead, and was buried in the village cemetery.

Abigail Currier, b. in Hampstead in 1814, a daughter of John and Hannah (Gile) Currier (see No. 236). She mar- ried, late in life, John Webster, of Lawrence, Mass., and moved to North Andover, where she now (1902) resides, a widow. She was admitted to the church July 1, 1838, and is a present member of the church in North Andover, to which she was dismissed about 1856.

Amassa Eastman, b. in Hampstead, April 11, 1789, a son of Joshua and Sarah (Tucker) Eastman (Nos. 169, 170).

He married Betsey Edmunds of Sandown (No. 349), and resided on the old Eastman homestead at West Hampstead. He was admitted to the church July 1, 1838, and died in Hampstead.

Betsey Edmunds, b. in Sandown, Aug. 14, 1795, a daugh- ter of Thomas and Mary ( Hoyt) Edmunds, of Sandown. She married Amassa Eastman (No. 348), and was admitted to the church July 1, 1838. and d. in Hampstead, Nov. 20, 1855, very suddenly, while on the street. near West Hamp- stead. Their children were :-

II. Jacob Edmunds, b. Dec. 8. 1820: d., unmarried, in Hampstead.

Elbridge Gerry Little, b. in Hampstead, Nov. 11, 1817, a son of Joseph and Rebecca ( Webster) Little. He married, first, Sarah E. Colman, of Newbury, Mass., in 1848, who d. 1851 : married, second. Mrs. Sarah J. Weston, who d. 1854 ; married, third, Lucia F. Sanderson of Philadelphia. He was admitted to the church July 1, 1838, and later taught school in Hampstead and vicinity. He prepared for :the ministry, being aided in his preparation for college by Benjamin Greenleaf of Bradford, Mass .. and entered a year in advance in the college of New Jersey: Graduated in 1845, having supported himself by giving private lessons. November 1, 1842, he was dismissed to the New

York City Presbyterian Church, under Rev. Dr. Phillips. He studied theology at Princeton Seminary, and first settled over the church at Manayank, Pa., in September, 1850. Ile was called to Merrimac, Mass., "where he had a very suc- cessful pastorate. uniting ninety-seven persons to the church in five years." He was pastor of the church at Ashburn- ham, Mass., two years : in Middleton, Mass., ten years. From 1867 to his decease, Dec. 29, 1869, he resided in Welles- ley, Mass., and was editor of Grey's Real Estate Journal. An obituary notice reads: "His ministry was marked by accuracy in scholarship and careful investigation. He was very instructive in his sermons and Bible classes, genial and affectionate in conversation, though inclined to the older type of Congregational theology, and very biblical in his statements and analysis." Their children were :-
