Sarah Elizabeth Heald. It was a pleasure to call on Mrs. Chandler, the oldest member of the church, Oct. 24, 1901, at her cosy home, No. 10 Union street, Haverhill, Mass., and hear from her the life story of her ninety years. Showing very few of the infirmities of age, and with a remarkable memory, with heartfelt greeting, and with the deepest interest in my work of compiling the church family his- tory, she said : " I was born in Carlisle, Mass., in poverty and want, Nov. 13, 1811, of poor, but highly respectable parents. My father, Paul Heald, was a carpenter by trade, and died in or near Buffalo, N. Y., of typhoid fever, in 1811, five weeks before I was born. My mother, Sarah (Nutting) Heald, died in Carlisle, and was buried there, in 1851, aged 67 years. My parents had three children. Paul married Elizabeth Richards of Atkinson, and had children: John, now of Springfield, Mass., Isaac (deceased), and Benjamin R. Heald, of Atkinson. Benjamin Hurd Heald married" Francis Bowers of Billerica, Mass., and resided there until his death, in 1897, aged 89 years. He was a farmer and stone mason. He was a fine singer, and led the choir at the Unitarian Church in Billerica for a number of years. They had no children. My parents were very much devoted to music, an art which has descended to their posterity.
I united with the Merrimac Street Congregational Church in Lowell, Mass., in 1828, the year the church was built. I was about seventeen years of age, and remember the words used the day I was admitted, "Sanctify through thy truth, Thy word is truth." I was a leader in the church choir for several years in Rev. Mr. Blanchard's church, with Miss Abbott, an aunt of Emma Abbott, the celebrated singer. I was a member of the Handel and Haydn Society.
I married, first, Deacon Liberty Frost, in 1836, a son of John and Sarah (Adams) Frost, of Jaffrey, N. H., where he was born. He was an overseer in the dressing room in a Lowell
