HISTORY OF THE
ing soldier, and a perfect gentleman. As an officer he was cool-headed, skillful and brave. Where duty called he seemed to know no fear. A letter to the writer detailing a short account of Lieutenant Moore's escape from Stone- man raid disaster is lost. We give a few points as we re- member them. With a comrade he was separated from the main body and obliged, amid a shower of bullets, to abandon their horses, and secrete themselves in a hole covered with weeds; from there they wandered on foot, secreting themselves by day in swamps and thickets, trav- eling by night, living on roots and berries and an occasional ear of green corn, eaten raw. For many days he thus wandered and was finally captured between the lines of the opposing armies by Union troops, who supposed that they had captured a veritable Johnnie.
M.
Captain Thomas S. Lupton was mustered as captain January 7th, 1863, and was discharged May 15th, 1865. A good officer. Captain Lupton was captured on Stone- man raid, was exchanged on Oct. 1, 1864, and again cap- tured.
Captain Wm. W. Rowcliff was mustered as Ist licuten- ant of Company "M" January 7th, 1863; was commis- sioned captain July 18th, 1865 ; and was mustered out with the regiment.
Second Lieutenant Jacob J. Ruby, was mustered as 2d lieutenant of Company "M" January 7th, 1863. Resigned January 8th, 1864.
Second Lieutenant Wm. W. Cowles, born in Hampshire county, Massachusetts, December 7th, 1830; learned the blacksmith trade; emigrated to Peoria county, Illinois, in 1856; enlisted in Company "M," 14th Illinois Cavalry, September 15th, 1862; was appointed orderly sergeant ; was commissioned 2d lieutenant July 11th, 1865 ; and was mustered out with the regiment.
Our records give imperfect casualty lists ; these we have supplemented with all we could obtain by other means. From some companies we could get nothing more, but they doubtless had the same casualties. These we have used in the biographies of officers and in the roster .. We also add a list of names of wounded and captured that are not noted in the roster or biographies.

ROLLS.
Classified roster of the 14th Illinois Cavalry Volunteers, compiled from the adjutant-general's report, with such corrections and additions as it is possible to gather from all other sources. To bring the roster within the limits of the book, only the most important data is included, words are abbreviated wherever possible, as cpt. for captured ; cpn. for captain ; lt. for lieutenant ; serg., sergeant ; corp., cor- poral ; wnd., wounded ; di., died; dis., discharged ; hosp., hospital ; pris., prison. Time abbreviations, 64, 1864 ; Jan., January ; Feb., February, etc. We adopt this form of roster to save space and to cheapen the cost, as the tabular form is expensive. We find the data furnished by our company records very imperfect, and sometimes errone- ous. We have striven to correct all errors and to furnish missing data as far as we could. Doubtless many that died in hospitals or at home, as well as many that were discharged for disabilities, were wounded in engagements, as seldom was it noted in the records when a comrade was wounded. The record of the captured was also imperfect. Deserters and reclaimed men are omitted from the lists as not being members. All who were members are accounted for in their proper lists. The members in each class are separated into companies by their company letter preced- ing each class. In these lists we include only enlisted men. We are compelled to omit dates from this roster, ex- cept dates of killed and wounded.
In the great Stoneman raid the dates include the events as J. 31 for July 31st, 1864 (battle of Sunshine church) ; A. 3 for August 3d, 1864 (the night attack and great slaughter ). For died we use d .; for died in hospital, d. h .; for died at home, d. home ; for died in prison, d. p. ; d. A., for died in Andersonville ; d. M., died in Macon ; d. R., died in Richmond ; d. An., died in Annapolis, Md .; d. C., died in Charleston, etc. First list the killed. Com- pany :

NOTE- When the picture was taken there was no thought of including it in the book; had there been, a deal of perplexity in obtaining names would have been pre- vented. We have done the best we could, and yet there are a number of blanks to be filled by writing names as they are learned. It was understood that only the members of the association, composed of comrades and relatives, were to be in the picture. We have included the name of Bruce Payne, not in the list, because it was pointed out by many comrades.
